LewisGale Hospital Alleghany (LGHA) has delivered decade-long commitment to helping save and improve patients' lives and to giving back to the extended community they call home. LGHA is a 204-bed acute care facility located in Low Moor, Virginia who serves patients in both Virginia and West Virginia, offering a full range of medical specialties from emergency medicine to general surgery. They are also home to the Senior Transitions program a 15-bed specialty unit for seniors with emotional and behavioral issues requiring short-term acute stabilization.At the same time, they are an important part of LewisGale Regional Health System an integrated network of closely aligned patient-care facilities that consistently rank among the top in the nation for patient care.
SUMMARY OF ROLE:
The CRT will perform all respiratory care related duties. Sets up and administers all routine and complex respiratory therapy procedures to patients of all ages in all areas of the hospital as prescribed by a physician. Respiratory technicians are responsible for the application and operation of acute care ventilators along with non-invasive ventilation including BiPAP and CPAP. Maintain all department and hospital records and enters accurate information into the hospital information system for the therapy given. Respiratory technicians evaluate, treat and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. The respiratory technician is also responsible for performing arterial punctures and the handling and analysis of blood gas specimens. The technician is responsible for the daily maintenance of the blood gas analyzers.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND FUNCTIONS:
Assesses patients and recommends respiratory therapy treatments
Plans, prepares and administers respiratory therapy treatments including nebulized medication administration, chest physical therapy, PEP therapy, aerosol therapy, incentive spirometry, oxygen administration and sputum inductions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Performs diagnostic pulmonary and cardiac tests.
Cleans, tests functionality, maintains and operates respiratory therapy equipment.
Responds to code blue calls and assists by maintaining the patient's airway and performs CPR.
Responds to Rapid Response Team calls.
Timely and thorough patient care documentation.
Concise reporting to oncoming shift and other healthcare providers.
Utilizes resources and materials safely and efficiently.
Performs all duties promptly and in a caring manner.
Presents a neat appearance and dresses in compliance with the dress code.
The respiratory technician is responsible for their assigned patients and area.
The respiratory technician works under the direct supervision of the respiratory therapy manager and the medical director.
Manages life support systems including ventilators and non-invasive ventilators.
Holter Monitor placement in the absence of the cardiac rehab department.
Technicians with additional training perform pulmonary function testing, EEG testing, and supervise pulmonary rehabilitation sessions.
Participate in bedside rounding with physicians and case management.
Medical gas transport/handling and safe storage of medical gas.
Attend staff meetings and educational opportunities as offered and required.
Cleaning and stocking code carts.
Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
Successful completion of the NBRC Certified Respiratory Technician exam.
Currently licensed as a professional Respiratory Therapist in state of Virginia
Licensed as a professional Respiratory Technician in Virginia.
