POSITION SUMMARY:

Knowledge of patient responses to medication, side effects and proper dosages used in respiratory care. Able to communicate effectively with Physicians, patient, nursing and other allied health practitioners, other managers, the public and with Administration.

Ability to teach/instruct, assess and reassess others as needed. Recognizes and reports patient abuse and neglect. Basic knowledge of dynamic and static pulmonary function values and knowledge of generally accepted practices in respiratory care as prescribed by the physician for all age groups.

Demonstrates knowledge in the delivery, setup and maintenance of respiratory care equipment based on routine and non-routine applications. Performs patient assessment and recommends appropriate therapeutic and diagnostic modalities per department protocols. Responsible for establishing and assisting with maintenance of arterial lines.

Qualifications

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

State Certified Respiratory Therapy Tech.

BCLS certification required on hire.

ACLS certification, PALS certification, and STABLE certification required WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Graduate of COARC approved Respiratory Care Program

Associate of Applied Science

Minimum of 6 months acute hospital experience required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

One year Hospital experience preferred. Adult critical care experience preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

Reads and writes basic English with the basic skills necessary to transfer Physician's orders.

Knowledge of universal precautions.

Ability to listen, empathize and respond to patient, family, internal and external partners needs.

Ability to exercise judgment in recommending and providing appropriate respiratory care procedures.

Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

VIEW JOBS The Respiratory Therapist Reg performs and directs the administration of respiratory care services (including but not limited to oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, inhaled medication, airway clearance, invasive and non-invasive ventilation and bedside spirometry), as ordered by a patients attending physician, in a quality manner that is in accordance with established procedures. Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation in emergency situations. WHAT IS EXPECTED (Essential Functions): Reviews physician's orders, analyzes patient's diagnostic test results and provides appropriate therapy based on the patients current clinical condition. If appropriate, implements approved protocols as directed by physician. Performs routine and advanced respiratory therapy; prioritizing patient needs in a rapidly changing environment. Instructs patient in the use of various respiratory care equipment in a thorough and professional manner. Assesses patient response to therapy and coaches the patient to improve technique. Documents all treatments and therapies given, any supplies used, and accurately files all corresponding charges. Reports outcomes of therapeutic interventions and makes recommendations as appropriate. Adheres to established policies within the BSWH system including but not limited to: infection control and isolation policies, HIPPA, time and attendance, and social media. Works willingly and professionally with other employees, healthcare professionals, and students. Takes responsibility and initiative to understand and complete any professional or technical requirements set by Baylor Scott and White leadership. Incorporates principles continuous quality improvement in all of aspects of clinical care, identifying opportunities as appropriate. Maintain knowledge of current RT practice and current healthcare information. Fulfills and maintains continuing educations requirements as deemed by the State of Texas Health and Human Services.
