The Respiratory Therapist/Pulmonary Function Technologist functions in both the Pulmonary Function and Respiratory Care areas. Assists management staff in assuring quality patient care. Performs both simple and complex pulmonary testing, including but not limited to spirometry, lung volume, diffusion capacity, and body plethysmography studies, along with arterial blood gas testing, six-minute walk testing, exhaled nitric oxide analysis, metabolic measurement studies, and hypoxia altitude simulation testing. Also provides support to the Sputum Induction services and other respiratory care services as directed. Participates in research projects, and helps to provide coverage in the main PFT Labs and satellite clinics. This individual is considered a fully functional respiratory therapist.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

Performs all of the following:

  • Complies with department, TJC and DPH standards.

  • Performs Pulmonary Function Tests and arterial blood gas punctures.

  • Assists with the development and review/revision of all PFT Lab Policies and Procedures.

  • Assists with the scheduling for all PFT-related areas including main PFT Labs and satellite clinics.

  • Provides diagnostic testing obtaining optimal patient effort and results.

  • Explains procedure to patient.

  • Addresses patient concerns and anxieties while explaining the desired action and possible adverse effects.

  • Performs ordered tests and documents/reports results.

  • Provides educational material to demonstrate use of device.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the clinical coordinator and/or director of the department.

  • Participates in clinical research projects.

  • Participates in Quality Improvement program as indicated

  • Performs all duties of staff Respiratory Therapist as assigned.

  • Assists in coordination of educational programs including orientation of new staff members, clinical students, and in-service education.

  • Maintains continuing education relating to age-specific care. The individual in this position must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principals of growth and development of the young adult through the geriatric patient. In addition, she/he must possess the ability to assess patient-related data relative to age-specific needs and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures.

  • Works closely with vendor representatives, system analysts, and Information Technology representatives related to software upgrades, troubleshooting, and problem-solving.

  • Closely monitors various systems to identify potential billing errors, documentation errors, etc...

  • Functions as an integral part of the Epic process.

QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Massachusetts license as a Respiratory Therapist.

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist.

  • A.S. in Respiratory Therapy minimum, BS preferred.

  • 1-3 years experience preferred, will consider recent graduates.

  • Work requires up to six months for development of rapport with physicians and allied health care team.

  • Must have BLS certification, ACLS desired.

  • CPFT/RPFT credential preferred, previous PFT experience desired.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, nurses and other allied health care members.

  • Must possess strong patient assessment skills.

  • Must possess professional and technical skills to act as a staff therapist.

  • Must possess strong organizational skills needed to assist staff therapists in prioritizing work.

  • Must demonstrate ability to motivate and direct professional and technical staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
1.Works in both in-patient and out-patient care areas and is exposed to same conditions as staff therapist.

VIEW JOBS 3/20/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-18T00:00 Under the general direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisors, the Senior Technologist is responsible for supervision of assigned workstations including Quality control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff and inventory management. This position requires a professional level of knowledge to read and report microbiological test results accurately to be used by clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. The Senior Technologist works independently in an efficient and organized manner and should demonstrate expertise in one or more areas of the laboratory. The Senior Technologist may be delegated the responsibility of the technical oversight of an area of the microbiology lab including day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operation and oversight of personnel performing testing and resulting. Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA: Responsibilities that may be delegated in writing to the Senior Technologist (Technical Supervisor - high complexity) 1. Must be accessible to test personnel at all times testing is performed and provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established in the Chemistry Laboratory. 2. Is responsible for providing day-to-day supervision of high-complexity test performance by qualified testing personnel and 3. Must be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by an individual qualified before 1/19/1993 (FR 493/1489(b)(5). Referred to Federal Register for exceptions when work can be reviewed within 24 hours by a general supervisor qualified under Fr 493.1461. and 4. Is responsible for monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained. Additional Responsibilities in collaboration with Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor: 1. Responsible for following Microbiology Laboratory procedures for specimen handling, specimen processing, test analyses, and reporting results, including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Understands and demonstrates that proficiency testing samples are testing in the same manner as patient specimens 2. Demonstrates working knowledge of Microbiology and independently performs routine and high complexity microbiology tests and procedures on all patient specimens according to laboratory standard operating procedures utilizing complex instrumentation and established manual methods. As outlined in CLIA under 493.1489(b)(5), performs high complexity testing only under the on-site, direct supervision of a general supervisor under 493.1461. a. Accurately reads cultures and performs automated and manual procedures with technical discrimination. b. Organizes workflow efficiently. c. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation and reporting of test results and utilizes technical judgment and independent decision-making when interpreting and reporting results. d. Follows laboratory policies and technical standard operating procedures. 3. Performs and keeps accurate records of equipment maintenance and quality control by following the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities and following instrument and procedural calibration policies. 4. Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and participates in internal and external continuing education programs to maintain competency in microbiology. 5. Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance and is capable of identifying problems that may adversely effect test performance and immediately notify the appropriate technical staff. 6. Performs clerical and support services as needed, including answering the telephone, calling STAT and Critical Alert values to appropriate clinical staff, control of inventory and performing general lab tasks. 7. Responds to customer needs and requests by professionally communicating with hospital personnel providing assistance related to microbiology laboratory policies and procedures, laboratory utilization and test result interpretation. 8. Provides daily supervision and assistance to technical and non-technical staff in the Microbiology laboratory. 9. Actively participates in training new employees, students, residents and fellows. 10. Assists Clinical Supervisor(s) in the overall operation of the shift, assumes weekend/holiday supervisory responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor. 11. May assist with review of daily work including patient results (final reports), quality control and equipment maintenance records for accuracy and compliance. 12. Notes trends, problems, and unusual occurrences as they arise and assists Clinical Supervisor(s) and Technical Director with problem resolution. 13. Keeps current in the developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Clinical Microbiology. 14. Participates in internal and external continuing education and professional development. Serves on internal and external laboratory and/or hospital committees. 15. Participates in the evaluation and validation of new methods, instrumentation and/or procedures. 16. Promotes the mission and vision of Brigham and Women's Hospital Laboratories; promotes a spirit of professionalism and excellence in performing among the Microbiology laboratory staff. 17. Is responsible to be aware of the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH and Laboratory policies and procedures. 18. Maintains hospital and laboratory policies, procedures, and plans which include infection control and safety plans. 19. Performs other duties as required which may include the roles and responsibilities of lower level testing personnel. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must possess a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology, or Chemical, Physical or Biological Science from an accredited college or university or other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart m 493, 1403-1495. 2. A minimum of 3 years of work experience in a Microbiology Laboratory. 3. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED 1. Must have a high level of understanding and advanced knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of test principles, equipment and its operation/maintenance. 2. Must have a high level of analytical ability and judgement to relate test results to normal and pathological states to resolve technical problems and interpret quality control data. 3. Must be extremely organized, have orderly work habits, capable of working under pressure and be flexible to adjust schedule in accordance with the needs of the department. 4. Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture, and manual dexterity sufficient to work with delicate instruments. 5. Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately. 6. Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with co-workers, clinicians, other hospital personnel and other outside contact. 7. Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols. 8. Must be able to maintain an appropriate level of professionalism. 9. Must be able to perform as a leader providing direction with guidance to less experienced personnel. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Busy laboratory environment including exposure to odors, infectious materials and other hazardous substances. 2. Eye strain may be encountered while closely examining specimens and while using microscopes. 3. Work requires frequent standing and walking and occasional lifting, generally no more than 20 pounds. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: 1. Microbiology Specimen processing technicians and Lab assistants. 2. Clinical Laboratory Technologists (I/II). 3.
