POSITION SUMMARY:# The Respiratory Development Specialist works collaboratively to design and implement competency programs, orientation, and education to CP staff. Responsible for developing and conducting in-service programs and continuing education for all CP staff.

Provides orientation to new residents and RNs as applicable. Serves as a skilled resource to CP staff, Physicians, RN educators and ancillary support departments. Provides clinical leadership and expertise.

Facilitates the development of collegial relationships.

Visible, accessible and committed to communicating effectively with staff.

Promotes the profession of Cardiopulmonary and professional practice.

Works collaboratively with Admin. Director, CP Team Leader and other applicable departments on projects relating to implementation of new CP equipment and protocols. Works collaboratively with the CP Team Leader and the Quality Improvement Department to ensure the Cardiopulmonary Department is in compliance with JCAHO, state and federal standards.

Acts as a liaison between the Hospital and Respiratory Therapy Programs. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Minimum associate degree in an approved Respiratory Care program, bachelor#s preferred.

Must provide a copy of diploma or transcript upon hire. The candidate must hold the credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care and a current license from the State of Connecticut to practice as a Respiratory Care Practioner. A candidate with a CRT credential must be registry eligible and obtain the RRT credential from the NBRC within 18 months of employment.# The candidate will hold a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

EXPERIENCE: Strong patient advocate. Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical respiratory care experience including neonatal. Experience with database/spreadsheets is helpful.

COMPETENCIES: Strong leadership skills, attention to detail and excellent communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing and possess basic computer skills.

Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills with patients, co-workers, Physicians, RN units and ancillary departments. Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between multiple work sites as travel is required to perform the essential function of the position. Must possess a strong focus on customer service and the ability to exhibit patience and empathy while providing care to a culturally diverse group of patients.

Effective written communication is required for accurate medical charting of respiratory services provided and concurrently clear and precise medical billing. Assist employees at all levels of the organization in developing educational programs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversees the cardiopulmonary administrative policies and procedure portal, reviewing and revising with up-to-date advanced knowledge. Acts as positive role model for Cardiopulmonary demonstrating practical integration of theory and evidenced based practice. Responsible for day-to-day departmental educational questions and/or needs, assisting Team Lead with policy reviewing and revisions, continues educational growth and development of Respiratory staff.

Coordinate and implements continuing education for all cardiopulmonary staff at both MMH and RGH. Develops programs to ensure that educational standards are met.

Maintain clinical competencies and education records of Cardiopulmonary staff.

Provides Pulmonary Rehab education to class in Cardiac Rehab once a month at both sites. Promotes physician satisfaction by maintaining good rapport and cooperative working relations with the Medical Staff.# Provides educational in-service to our medical team as necessary. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function in stressful situations.# Utilizes critical thinking skills and sound judgment in priority setting and delegation.

Pursues personal and professional growth and development.# Serves as a professional role model and mentor to advance clinical practice. Coordinates and implements orientation to new staff. Demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and application of JCAHO, State and Federal standards.

Collaborate in setting unit standard of care and monitors indicators of Quality.# Performs other duties assigned or directed to ensure smooth department operations and organization. Assists Admin. Director and Team Leader with identifying issues and ensuring a timely response.

Collaborates with department of Nursing and Residency program to develop individualized orientation programs. Assists with the collection of data, analysis and display of information, development, implementation, and follow-up action plans to ensure improvement is achieved and retains involvement until closure. Participates in committees or groups involving educational needs or changes of department and/or facility.

Participates in direct patient care, create an environment in which high quality care can be provided. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department and organization.
