Position Summary:

Investigates, evaluates, disposes and settles less complex claims with moderate supervision and includes the investigation, determination and evaluation of coverage, liability and damages and the setting of proper reserves. Incumbents at this level typically hold claims reserve and settlement authority of up to $5,000 liability and/or $10,000 workers compensation or greater.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Exercises proper judgment and decision making to analyze the claims exposure to determine the proper course of action and to appropriately settle the claim.

  • Interacts extensively with various parties involved in the claim process.

  • Handles claims consistent with clients' and corporate policies, procedures and "best practices" and also in accordance with any statutory, regulatory and ethics requirements.

  • Documents and communicates all claim activity timely and effectively and in a manner which supports the outcome of the claim file.

  • Incumbents at this level should be able to work at full case load capacity.

Required:

  • High School Diploma

  • Minimum of 3 years related claims experience required

  • Appropriately licensed and/or certified in all states in which claims are being handled.

  • Knowledge of accepted industry standards and practices.

  • Computer experience with related claims and business software.

Desired:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Licensed Workers' Compensation Adjuster for TX, NY, AZ, AK, HI

About the Job Manages processing of medical provider in-claim services (i.e. processing of medical bills & adjustment requests) through BWC's Cambridge billing system: charges & makes determinations to pay, deny, &/or adjust in-claim medical charges associated with pre-Health Partnership (HPP) provider billing, Managed Care Organization (MCO) billing, lump-sum settlement claims & reimbursement & non-routine billing for non-HPP business (e.g. black lung, marine fund, Medicare and recovery agents); processes bills & adjustments for payment &/or denial; pays &/or adjusts bills for claim settlements; completes research, bill-payment &/or adjustments on written & phone-billing inquiries & prepares comprehensive written responses; assists management in planning, analysis & suggestions regarding the implementation of solutions to problems. Performs on-line exam entry of medical invoices, resolves claims-related edits through automated claims information system: adjusts previously-awarded payments (e.g. debits, credits, adjustments); resolves unresolved medical invoices; pays medical bills; determines appropriate fees for surgery &/or hospital bills; documents daily production on Access database; provides progress updates on special projects; manually enters Cambridge bills; audits manually keyed & adjusted bills & researches payments & denials for MCOs.
