Must be a qualified employee of the New York State Office of Mental Health and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as Mental Hygiene Therapy Assistant 1, Mental Hygiene Therapy Assistant 1 (Spanish Language), Mental Hygiene Therapy Assistant 2, Mental Hygiene Therapy Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), Recreation Assistant, Recreation Assistant (Spanish Language), Recreation Worker, Recreation Worker (Spanish Language), Rehabilitation Assistant 1, Rehabilitation Assistant 1 (Spanish Language), Rehabilitation Assistant 2, Rehabilitation Assistant 2 (Manual Communications), Rehabilitation Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), Residential Program Assistant 1, Residential Program Assistant 2, Social Work Assistant 1, Social Work Assistant 1 (Spanish Language), Social Work Assistant 2, Social Work Assistant 2 (Chinese Language), Social Work Assistant 2 (Korean Language), or Social Work Assistant 2 (Spanish Language), AND possess a bachelors or higher degree in any field.

Open Competitive:
Either 1. a bachelors or higher degree in any field AND one year of experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness;
Or 2. a masters degree in a human services field.*
If you are appointed provisionally, you must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title and your score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before you can be permanently appointed. If you do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score, you may not be retained.
Duties Description As a Residential Program Specialist, you would provide care to individuals diagnosed with mental illness in community residential settings in a culturally competent manner. Under the general direction of the Residential Program Manager, you would take the lead among staff in the monitoring, identifying needs, and care of residents. You would have specific responsibility for planning and implementing rehabilitative programs and individually designed service plans for patients in the residence and for establishing and maintaining contacts with other service providers in the community. You may also supervise lower level residential program staff and may serve as assistant to the Residential Program Manager and as manager of the residence in his/her absence.
