THIS IS A 115 NON-MANAGERIAL EXEMPT POSITION
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for Residential Life Trainers for The North Carolina School for the Deaf.
The primary purpose of this position, located at NC School for the Deaf (NCSD) is to ensure the care, supervision, and welfare of students in a residential setting. The Residential Life Trainer will assist students with needs related to their health impairments, multiple disabilities and/or behavior issues.
Assistance will be provided with personal hygiene, behavioral management, and socialization and leisure activities. A trainer will also assist with weekend transportation and field trips to ensure the safety of the students when necessary.
This position will have direct residential care assisting students with developing a functional understanding of personal growth including punctuality, cooking, cleaning, budgeting, laundry, formal social skills, and behavior. Assist with personal hygiene, independent living skills, first aid, manners, survival skills, self-esteem, developing good character, assisting with services from the community, proper etiquette, and nutrition.
Assist students with homework, class projects, and reading. Aid students that need guidance. Refer students to the Student Health Center for medical attention if needed.
Responsible for being a positive role model for our students. Attend scheduled workshops as required.
The Residential Life Trainer will document weekly lesson plans, maintain, coordinate and post activities for dorm areas, explain and post dorm rules, bedtime and wake up schedules, meal schedule, homework and study hall schedule, recreational and leisure activities, and special programs. This position will plan and coordinate activities with Residential Life Coordinator, consult and cooperate with persons responsible for implementation of student IEPs, prepare and maintain various forms of written documentation of information related to students and maintain the Student Safety Check Sheet entries every 10 minutes during bedtime hours.
This position will be expected to be ready to drive and/or ride assigned transportation as monitors on minibuses transporting students to and from home to ensure their safety and/or drive or monitor for scheduled fieldtrips for fun or educational activities with the students. This position must be able to communicate effectively with deaf and/or hard of hearing children; therefore, attending sign language classes are a requirement for this job.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of guiding, training and caring for children, youth and/or adults.
Knowledge and understanding the personal and social problems of children, youth and/or adults.
Knowledge and understanding to exercise judgment in assessing, observing, and recording progress, participation, and/or demonstrated skills and abilities of clients.
Management Preferences:
Ability to use American Sign Language to effectively communicate with deaf students and/or their parents/guardians and other deaf staff. The successful applicant may be required to become proficient in American Sign Language within a reasonable time as a condition of continued employment.

Minimum Education and Experience (Children & Youth) High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in an age- appropriate childcare setting or a goal- oriented setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum Education and Experience (Adult) High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in residential or goal-oriented program for adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
