This is a 11-month, 3rd shift position working Monday - Friday, 12 midnight until 8:00 a.m.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Residential Life Trainer (RLT) for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS). Governor Morehead School is a residential school, responsible for providing educational instruction to visually impaired students in grades K-12 from across North Carolina. This position is responsible for monitoring and supervising activities of visually impaired students Monday-Friday between 12:00 midnight and 8:00 a.m.

This involves addressing any issues that occur during the night and involving appropriate staff (such as nurse, supervisor or security) as needed; ensuring that students are safe during the night; assisting students as needed with bathing, dressing, and grooming as they prepare for the school day; accompanying students to the dining hall and supervising breakfast; accompanying students along their morning class. Additionally, housekeeping duties such as laundry/sanitizing are part of the responsibility of this position. Employee is responsible for documenting student activities and any incidents that occur during the shift. Employees will be responsible to align the residential learning environment with the ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum).  Employee is responsible for following all policies and procedures of the School.

Employee will be asked to assist in providing transportation for students which could include driving a state-owned vehicle.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Valid NC Driver's License. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.

  • Must be able to pass Criminal Background Check.

  • Must be able to pass drug screening.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Applicants with experience working with students with disabilities from 5-22 years of age.

  • Basic computer skills.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in residential or goal-oriented program for adults; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

NOTE:  Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
