The office of Residential Life is currently hiring students to be summer Resident Assistants (RAs). The RAs are employees of Middlebury College, in the office of Residential Life and are supervised by the Associate Dean for Student Life, or their designee. Summer RAs work with summer residents and primarily function as a resource for students living on-campus. Summer RAs provide community development through event planning and hosting, maintaining regular availability, and providing on-call support throughout the summer.
The Summer RA typically works 10 hours per week, but may vary from week to week. Position starts on May 26, 2024, and the end date is August 24, 2024 with the possibility of additional work up until September 8, 2023.
Qualifications:
The ideal summer RA is an undergraduate student who demonstrates an understanding of both the mission of Residential Life and the College. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in leadership, conflict resolution, teamwork, and working with diverse groups of individuals. Candidates should also demonstrate competency in written and oral communication, as well as use of good judgment in handling sensitive issues. A successful candidate will be proactive, possess a positive demeanor and have excellent interpersonal skills. Prior Residential Life or other student leadership experience preferred. Applicants must have lived on-campus for at least one year.
Responsibilities:
Live on campus in assigned building/room
Undergo training at the beginning of the summer
Be a visible, available presence in the assigned residence halls
Regular communication with summer residents, including creating and maintaining a group chat
Be available to answer resident questions and provide support on assigned weekends, ensuring at least one summer RA is on campus each weekend
May be called upon to support other staff during facilities and/or emergency situations
Assist in addressing community issues, including the upkeep of shared communal spaces like community kitchens, bathrooms, and lounges
Report maintenance, custodial, and facilities issues and submit work orders
Hold hall/community meetings at the beginning of the summer and on-going as needed
Assist in addressing student issues (e.g. roommate issues, referral to services, etc.)
Aid in educating on and enforcing College policy within the halls, promoting individual responsibility and community impact
Maintain an active working relationship with custodial services, facilities services, public safety, and other College partners
Coordinate with other summer RAs to host a minimum of one event/program per week
Other duties and special projects as required
Compensation:
Single room and summer meal plan provided when dining halls are open.
