Description of Duties:

Teaching and Curriculum Development

Junior Residential Education Classes:

  • Cornerstone Course: Facilitate student transitions to NCSSM, covering professional communication, healthy relationships, culture, and self-care.

  • College and Career Planning: Co-teach with the Counseling Department, focusing on preparing students for post-secondary education and careers.

Elective Courses:

  • Financial Planning, Leadership, Public Speaking, and Exploring Multicultural America: Teach these elective courses, aiming to provide students with essential life skills and a broad understanding of multicultural perspectives.

Curriculum Responsibilities:

  • Develop, evaluate, and revise curricula based on research, staff consultation, and assessments.

  • Utilize evaluations and data to recommend improvements and edits to curricula annually.

  • Employ diverse teaching and assessment methods incorporating technology.

  • Assess student work with clear, relevant criteria.

  • Maintain and submit accurate reports and grades by published deadlines.

  • Communicate with other instructors to share ideas and resources.

  • Ensure availability to students outside of classroom hours for additional support.

  • Continually evaluate class sessions for improvement opportunities.

Communication:

  • Engage in verbal and written communication with students, parents, and the student support team.

Community Coordinator Duties

  • Student Support and Community Building:

  • Manage and supervise a residence hall community.

  • Foster a supportive and cohesive community within the residence hall.

  • Handle emergency responses, incident management, and student discipline.

  • Promote wellness programming and community events.

  • Emergency Response:

  • Act as a front-line responder for student and residence hall emergencies.

  • Serve "in loco parentis" for students, working closely with counselors, academic advisors, and parents/guardians.

  • Be the primary point of contact for students' families and collaborate with faculty and staff to support students.

Housing Responsibilities

  • Complete room conditioning reports for all residence halls.

  • Assist in coordinating the roommate selection process for juniors and seniors.

  • Help with housing-related tasks during the opening and closing of residences.

  • Support the Director with contracts for services like food, laundry, and vending.

Community Engagement and Projects:

  • Present at Family Day, Discovery Days, and Welcome Days.

  • Conduct room tours during Welcome Day.

  • Participate in institutional committee assignments and campus life activities.

  • Lead campus programs and training sessions on student success topics.

  • Pursue professional development through coursework, conferences, and workshops.

  • Assist with special projects as directed by the Residential Education and Housing Directors.

Preference will be given to candidates with previous live on experience; teaching or training experience; knowledge/experience working with high school aged students. Previous experience in residence life, education, counseling. Experience in the use of educational technology.

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work with technology and other resources to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of practices and procedures.

Candidates must possess a valid driver's license with no serious driving-related convictions.

Post-baccalaureate credentials (e.g., master's degree or higher), although a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.  Prior teaching experience preferred.

Vacation: Varied based on classification. For SHRA and Faculty, earn from 14 days to 26 days per year based on years of state service.  EHRA SAAO employees receive 26 days per year and EHRA EPS (Exempt Professional Staff) employees receive 24 days per year. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated. Leave is earned monthly.

Sick Leave: 12 days per year. Leave accruals for part-time and less than 12 month employees are pro-rated.

Additional Leave: Family Medical Leave (FMLA), Paid Parental Leave (PPL), Civil Leave, Personal Observance Day, Extended Illness, Short/Long Term Disability, Family Illness Leave, Military Leave, Community Service Leave, Voluntary Shared Leave and Leave Without Pay.

Holidays: 12 days per year

Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the State Health Plan (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.

Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).

Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals.  Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions.

Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees.

State Employees Credit Union: Membership welcomed. Contact the SECU Credit Union for information.

Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option - 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.

Facilities: Library & Gymnasium - other athletic facilities available at no cost to employees. Cafeteria on site.
