Job Description:

The Residential Education Coordinator (REC) is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in professional staff position responsible for providing leadership and supervision for a residence hall housing approximately 300-500 residents. Reporting to an Assistant Director of Residential Education, Residential Education Coordinators oversee the daily operation of a residence hall and serve as an active and visible Residential Life staff member. RECs lead educational and community-building initiatives within a residence hall through supervision of staff, building relationships with and assisting residents, enacting community standards procedures, and serving on an on-call duty rotation. RECs are also instrumental in contributing to the success of Residential Life and the FIT Division of Student Success through department-wide and campus activities including move in/out, student leadership retreats, summer housing, departmental committees, assessment, and more. RECs perform other duties as assigned are expected to contribute to a positive, team-oriented, energetic, and flexible work atmosphere. Responsibilities and areas of oversight are subject to change based on the needs of the department and the campus community.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

Supervision

  • Supervise and evaluate Resident Assistants on a regular basis, including providing guidance, feedback, and professional development through weekly staff meetings, one-on-one meetings, and staff evaluations.

  • Facilitate staff development.

  • Assist with the selection and training of student staff members.

  • Advise student leaders in the Residence Hall Association (RHA).

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Coordinate department processes within assigned area, including hall openings and closings, health and safety inspections, maintenance requests, overnight visitation, damage billing, and room consolidation.

  • Oversee building and committee budgets and approve staff expenditures.

  • Produce monthly reports related to residence hall operations.

  • Walk through building(s) on a regular basis for cleanliness and maintenance needs identification.

  • Chair/Co-chair a departmental committee and provide leadership to an assigned area.

  • Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residential Life staff meetings, professional development sessions, building staff meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors.

  • Assist with the housing selection process for new and returning.

Community Standards and Student Support

  • Develop relationships with students through one-on-one contact and community development.

  • Advocate for resident and community needs.

  • Communicate, interpret and enforce department and college standards and policies.

  • Maintain due process and a restorative, learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process.

Emergency and Crisis Response

  • Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation and oversee the implementation of duty and crisis response protocols.

  • Provide appropriate post-crisis referrals and follow-up with students and staff as needed.

  • Serve as a liaison with Public Safety, Health Services, Counseling Center, Dean of Students Office, Title IX.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a college residential setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education, student development or related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of stakeholders including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, and parents.

  • Excellent supervisory, teamwork, conflict resolution, project management, and organizational skills.

  • Knowledge in the areas of residential curriculum, crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, student conduct administration, and restorative practices.

  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability, equity, and social justice; experience working with a diverse student population, supporting the needs of marginalized students, and engaging students and staff on issues of diversity and social justice.

  • Ability to work effectively and positively in an environment characterized by change, including the ability to acquire new knowledge and utilize that information to develop new programs and services.

  • Knowledge of FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act and other state and federal laws as they relate to residential life administration.

  • Engagement in the field of student affairs and higher education administration with an interest and willingness to learn, implement, and share best practices and new approaches.

  • Capacity to work in a 24-hour/7 day environment with the ability to quickly respond to and handle situations for the entire residential campus.

  • A genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, families, faculty, and staff and in supporting the mission of higher education and student affairs.

Additional Information:

Staff in Residential Life are employees of the FIT Student Housing Corporation, a 501(c)(3) entity. Compensation and benefits are determined through the Housing Corporation governance process and are subject to change as such.

Salary

Salary: $61,000 per year commensurate with experience.

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; evenings and weekends, work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position will be required to constantly read and comprehend, occasionally perform calculations, constantly verbally communicate, frequently analyze, and constantly write. The working conditions for this position will be on campus primarily in an office environment or residence hall. The physical requirement for this position will require frequent sitting, occasional standing, occasional bending, frequent walking, and occasional lifting 20 - 50 lbs.
