We are currently recruiting for a Nurse Supervisor II to function as the Residential Director to supervise the residential services section. This position assumes a leadership role in conjunction with the Facility Director, Medical Director, and Quality Assurance Manager in the implementation of specialized treatment needs of residents.  This position is responsible for ensuring that each unit operates as a well-organized and well-structured treatment milieu that will foster a positive peer group culture, personal achievements, successful programs, progress on treatment goals, and activities and programs that are appropriate to the developmental level of participants.

The Residential Director coordinates scheduling monthly and daily and must be able to coordinate quickly using available resources of staff.

 The Residential Director ensures that processes are followed throughout the facility, including IC procedures, safety measures, and ensuring structured programming.

  The Residential Director coordinates activities between defined areas and provides clinical-level input into treatment team and other clinical decisions.   This position performs on several committees and attends multiple meetings per week and must be able to multitask many complex situations while ensuring good time management skills.  This position is ultimately responsible for overall safety of the units, residents, and staff.

 The Residential Director has 24-hour responsibility for assuring the efficient and effective delivery of quality psychiatric, behavioral, and medical nursing care, based on the NCBON practices and the Nurse Practice Act.  This position is a representative of the Management Team and Executive Leadership Team within Whitaker and must be prepared to be available to be on call and respond on site if needed.  The Residential Director will assist with investigation, improvements in systems and processes, participate in all survey activity, and issue disciplinary action when needed.

This is a full-time position. The normal working hours are Monday

  • Friday, 8:00 a.m.

  • 5:00 p.m., with flexibility as required to meet business needs.  This position is considered essential during adverse weather and must report during adverse weather.

The NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the largest, most complex agencies in the state, with approximately 18,000 employees.  In collaboration with its partners, it is responsible for ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all North Carolinians.

Whitaker PRTF is an 18-bed secure psychiatric residential treatment facility operated by the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities. The facility operates 24 hours a day and provides psychiatric, nursing, psychology, social work and recreational activity services for residents which is operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disorders and Substance Abuse Services.

Whitaker employs a re-education model which prepares the adolescents to successfully return to the community. As part of the Child and Family Services Section, it provides residential care, supervision and educational services for residents with complex behavioral, emotional, psychological and neurological disorders. It also provides community liaison support services for residents and families with a staffing complement of approximately 70 full-time clinical, educational, residential and support positions. This school serves the entire state.

  • Knowledge of psychiatric nursing care systems, preferably residential care services.

  • Ability to plan, organize, direct and evaluate nursing care.

  • Ability to develop recommendations and provide consultation to solve problems

  • Knowledge of The Joint Commission or CMS Behavioral Health Care/PRTF standards, including the ability to exercise judgment in interpreting and applying standards, policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of risk management, conflict resolution, creative problem solving, and program evaluation.

Management Preferences:   Preference will be given to applicants with previous nursing experience in a residential facility and experience with adolescents with behavioral issues.

Physical requirements will be discussed during the interview process but, at a minimum, include the ability to obtain and maintain NCVI and CPR certification and the ability to lift 50 pounds A working knowledge of performance improvement and resident safety.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus (effective 10/18/21)

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);

(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;

(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
