  1. Fringe benefits will include health insurance, which will only be provided from June 23 to August 3 and will be secondary to the employee's health plan.

  • The resident manager is required to live in the campus residential hall with the Upward Bound students and is on call/must be available in the residence hall, 24 hours a day, Sunday
  • Friday while students are in residence.

Position Overview

The Rhode Island College Upward Bound Program is a federally funded program for rising 10, 11, and 12 grade college-bound high school students. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school graduation, college-going, and college graduation rates of program participants. This summer program aims to foster a community that values academic excellence, personal growth, and student responsibility. Participants will live in a residence hall at RIC, where they will be under the supervision of a team of tutor counselors and professional advisors. During the program, students will take high school courses in literature and writing, mathematics, science, and SAT prep. They will also get an introduction to a foreign language, dance and STEM courses. In addition to academic coursework, the program offers social, recreational, cultural, and field trip activities for students to explore.

Supervise team of 8-12 summer residential Tutor Counselors

Essential Duties

  • Manage the residential component of the summer program, which includes supervising Tutor Counselors, overseeing the well-being of 80-100 students, and organizing events.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop orientation and training programs for the Tutor Counselors.

  • Ensure that the Upward Bound Student Code of Conduct is reinforced, monitored, and implemented.

  • Maintain accurate records of lockouts, lost keys and IDs, and student contact information, and provide data to staff upon request.

  • Design and execute student activities that foster character development, diversity, conflict resolution, and positive peer groups within the Upward Bound community.

  • Schedule weekly meetings with each Tutor Counselor to discuss program updates, student issues, review required tutoring documentation, and for general check-ins.

  • Attend weekly meeting with professional staff to establish a residential environment that promotes learning and student development.

  • Collaborate with Rhode Island College departments' staff.

  • Follow established policies and procedures to manage routine and emergency situations.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to work independently and effectively with others.

Additional requirements/expectations:

  • Candidates cannot be enrolled in summer classes during the employment period.

  • Must be available full-time, 24 hours per day, Sunday evening through Friday evening while the summer program is in session for students. Evening emergency meetings are sometimes required.

  • Must adhere to State, College, and Upward Bound Program policies during the employment period.

  • Candidates should possess the character, maturity and leadership skills that foster an environment conducive to learning.

Special Considerations/Information:

The Resident Manager must live in the campus residential hall where students and Tutor Counselors will live.

Required Qualifications

Education: Junior or senior status in a bachelor's degree program

GPA Preferred: at least 3.00 at the end of the fall 2023 semester.

Preferred Experience:

  • One to two years' residential life work experience.

  • Prior managerial role that demonstrates leadership potential.

  • Prior experience working with adolescents from diverse backgrounds, academic needs, and abilities

Recent college graduates and post-graduate degree students are encouraged to apply.

Environmental Conditions

The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions. Teaching instruction is performed in a traditional classroom setting, and the residential facility is one of the college dormitories. However, participation in planned cultural and social activities with students is an expected function of this position.
