Job Posting Summary

The Resident Director is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position. This position is part of a team responsible for the overall management of a residential life program serving over 750 students. The main responsibilities of this position include managing one of the residence halls, facilitating student development through individual student interactions and events, building residence hall community and student leadership, and working closely with campus stakeholders. Additionally, Resident Directors supervise paraprofessionals and residential assistants in multiple capacities.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Promote, supervise, and advise on themed programming, community building, and leadership development.

  • Create an inclusive community in the residence hall through educating and challenging resident assistant staff, individual conversations with staff/students and personal development in these core areas.

  • Serve as a visible and accessible resource in the residence hall community for student interaction.

  • Focus on relationship building and student interaction on a daily basis with hall residents.

  • Promote an environment in the residence halls that supports the mission the Division of Student Affairs.

  • Assist hall staff in promoting an environment that is safe, conducive to studying and well-maintained.

  • Provide support and resources for students living on campus, and referrals when appropriate.

  • Assist and support residents in their growth and identity through providing support, mediation, crisis intervention and follow-up through a culturally competent lens.

  • Assist with executing the first year experience curriculum.

  • Assist with overseeing the office's front desk.

  • Adjudicate cases for residents within own hall in relation to housing contract and/or student handbook violations.

  • Serve in a designated duty rotation for approximately 650 students.

  • Respond to and follow-up on emergency and management situations as needed.

Operations & Administration

  • Maintain a working relationship with housing staff, the Office of Campus Safety, Student Counseling Center, Office of Student Conduct, Facilities Services, and other campus offices/resources.

  • Manage and mediate roommate conflicts.

  • Coordinate the day-to-day operations including but not limited to opening/closing of their residence hall, completing room changes, overseeing the building's front desk, and liaising with other departments to keep up the cleanliness and safety of the halls.

  • Manage budgets related to programming.

  • Effectively utilize operational systems such as Starrez, Banner, Maxient, Microsoft Office Suite, and others to perform administrative functions of the position.

  • Perform other functions and assume responsibilities related to hall management as assigned.

Resident Assistant and Student Management

  • Select, train, supervise and complete performance reviews with paraprofessional staff using inclusive hiring, training, and supervision practices.

  • Communicate and hold student staff accountable for job expectations as outlined by The Office of Residential Life, and any additional expectations established within the community.

  • Meet regularly with supervisor and Resident Assistants.

  • Support in recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation processes for front desk assistants.

  • Facilitate weekly staff meetings.

Qualifications

The Resident Director should be a high energy, positive role model who is committed to student affairs, leadership and have demonstrated skills in student engagement. Successful candidates will be highly collaborative, but will also have the skills needed to make decisions independently. The qualified individual should also display a commitment to student success and service excellence. This position involves high student contact, traveling, and frequent evening and weekend hours.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of leadership, project management, conflict management, crisis response experience.

  • Ability to implement student development theories to meet the needs of our student population.

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Direct experience in Residential Life.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Banner, and/or Starrez.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Physical/Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to push, pull, move or lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to meet all general health requirements for the position as per university policies

Compensation offered will be commensurate with the educational background and work experience of the individual.

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:

Deferred Compensation Plan

All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.

Defined Contribution Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.

If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
