SUMMARY

This is a 45-week position (Late July through early June).

The mission of Residence Life at Spring Arbor University is to guide students' growth through meaningful relationships with God and others in a purposeful living/learning community.

The primary duty of the Resident Director (RD) is to be responsible for the overall management, administration and operation of one or more residential area(s). She is part of the Office of Student Development and Success (SDS) and is responsible to foster an environment that encourages students to grow spiritually, emotionally, academically, relationally, and physically.

Spring Arbor University (SAU) believes in whole-person education. RDs accomplish this through intentional relationships with Resident Assistants (RAs) and residents, knowledgeable referral to other campus services, and programming in SAU's residence areas.

RDs also perform a variety of roles within SDS that are not related directly to residence life. An important part of the RD position is a ministry that requires consistent availability and frequent visibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned by proper personnel.

DUTIES FOCUSED ON STUDENTS

Establishes residential living and learning policies.
Manages the student discipline process within the residence, with authority to remove a student from the residence and/or to effectively recommend dismissal of a student from SAU.
Determines and carries out methods to resolve student interpersonal conflicts and to aid students in doing so themselves.
Assists students with establishing and maintaining healthy living habits.
Independently designs and executes an overall residential living and learning program, including educational events and student activities.
Provides health information and medical assistance to students in accordance with instructions from Holton Health and Wellness Services.
Ensures a safe, well-maintained, and comfortable housing experience, including effective recommendation of repair/replacement of building furnishings, fixtures, and components.
Coordinates all housing assignments and roommate changes in his/her area.
Supports, in attitude and action, the University's mission, policies, and standards and promotes intercultural awareness, sensitivity, and appreciation.
Enhances and furthers the academic mission of the institution.

DUTIES FOCUSED ON RESIDENT ASSISTANTS (RAs)

Participates in the selection and training of RAs.
Conducts weekly staff meetings with RAs and meets individually with each RA.
Supervises RAs and hold them responsible for carrying out their duties; evaluates the RAs' job performance.
Is supportive of the RAs and remains actively engaged through frequent contact and visibility in their living areas.
Holds RAs accountable to have a minimum of two area activities per semester and fostering intentional community and care for their residents
Understands and supports the efforts of the Spiritual Life Leaders and the Intercultural Assistants.

DUTIES FOCUSED ON SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Models commitment to Jesus Christ and his Lordship.
Encourages students to establish and participate in regular spiritual growth activities such as worship, personal devotions, prayer, Bible study, service activities, and discussions concerning responsibilities and opportunities for Christians in the world.
Assists students with integrating their commitment to Jesus Christ with their personal live, lifestyles, values, academic pursuits, and worldview.
Empowers students to develop healthy interpersonal relationships by creating a living-learning environment that reflects the Christian goals of SAU.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Supports the function of SDS by working at least 8 hours per week in an area where department needs meet personal gifts and passions.
Strategically attends campus activities to support the community (i.e. concerts, Student Government Association programming, university community meetings, athletic events, etc.)
Is the "On Duty" person for Residence Life on a rotating basis (roughly one week per month). At times this on-duty will include answering the Campus Safety phone.
Meets weekly one-on-one with supervisor and meets weekly with the Res Life team.
Provides consistent, detailed, and accurate records of all confrontations and disciplinary scenarios for the purpose of assisting SDS concerning future confrontations.
Attends all SDS staff meetings and occasional special meetings.
Participates in the Behavioral Risk Assessment Team as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred.
Residence life experience preferred.
Must have a ministry mindset and the ability to work well with a wide variety of people.
Must be skilled in written and verbal communication.
Individual will exhibit a life and service that is in full accord with the Spring Arbor University Concept and Community Covenant.
