Resident Assistants Leader Opportunity

The School of International Service (SIS) is currently accepting applications for resident assistant (RA) program director for its two-week Community of Scholars (CoS) pre-college summer program. We are looking for motivated candidates to join our team. While previous resident assistant experience is preferred, all candidates with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Job Duties:

As an RA program director, you will live in dormitories with CoS-participating high school students and supervise other RAs for the duration of the program (July 8 to July 19); RAs will be expected to move into dorms on Saturday, July 6.

Responsibilities:

  • Program Oversight: Supervise a team of reRAsfor the Community of Scholars summer program and serve as the primary contact for the RAs and program director. Coordinate RA duties that include, but may not be limited to:

  • RA work schedules

  • Student drop-off/registration and departure

  • Back-up strategy for when RAs have their night off

  • Sign-ups for RA-led small group trips

  • Student Support: Provide guidance, support, and supervision to high school students participating in the program. This may involve addressing any concerns or issues they may have and ensuring their safety and well-being throughout their stay.

  • Residential Life: Oversee the residential aspects of the program, including managing check-in and check-out procedures, coordinating room assignments, and enforcing program policies and rules within the residential facilities.

  • Community Building: Foster a positive and inclusive community among the high school students by organizing social and recreational activities, team-building exercises, and educational workshops. Encourage student engagement and create opportunities for meaningful connections.

  • Crisis Management: Be prepared to handle any emergencies or critical incidents that may arise during the program. This includes following established protocols, maintaining open communication with relevant stakeholders, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Maintain regular communication with RAs and program director. Provide updates on program activities, student progress, and address any concerns or questions promptly.

Your responsibilities will include facilitating evening activities, overseeing free time/study periods, assisting with daytime activities, and addressing any student concerns that may arise. Additionally, RAs will need to attend a mandatory Zoom training session in June (date TBD) and an in-person orientation on July 7.

The RA program director may hold other employment commitments during the program but must be on campus throughout the two weeks. You will rotate being on-call each morning to assist students as they prepare for class and serve as emergency contacts during the night. Furthermore, the RA program director and other RAs will be required to supervise students and participate in activities throughout the weekend of July 13 and 14.

Educational Requirements:

Must be a current undergraduate student during the summer.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to get along with residents of various cultures and backgrounds.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Leadership and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work in multicultural environments.

  • Comfortable moving event tables/chairs and able to lift 25 pounds.

Preferred Requirements:

Previous experience working in an AU residence hall.

Stipend:

This position offers a stipend of $1,300 along with housing and meals provided for the duration of the two-week program. RAs will have one evening off during the twelve days.
