Mitchell College is accepting applications for a Resident Hall Director to promote student academic success by building relationships with the residential community, facilitating student development, and encouraging program participation. The RHD will utilize the Community Development Model to create an exceptional living and learning environment as well as apply the student development theory to residence hall community development, student concerns, staff supervision, student organization advising, educational & social programming. Additionally, this position will be responsible for for the supervision of Building Resident, Community and Desk Assistants, response to student concerns, administrative and facility management, and participation in departmental initiatives.

This is a full time, academic year (11 months) administrative position reporting directly to the Director of Residential Life and Student Conduct. Compensation includes room and board and a comprehensive benefits package.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide leadership for the development and maintenance of positive residence hall communities through the application of student development and learning practices and for the development, implementation, and evaluation of residence hall educational and social programming to meet the needs of the residents.

  • Collaborate with the Director of FYE in the implementation of First Year residential. Programming including workshops and events in conjunction with FYE academic goals.

  • Together with the other RDs, facilitates program planning before FSY Residential Life Staff and FSY students arrive.

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate RAs and desk assistants.

  • Advise, confer, and offer appropriate support and referrals for students who exhibit academic and personal concerns.

  • Provide regular and timely support for the residence hall association by regularly attending meetings and hall programs, maintaining regular contact with officers, and ongoing training for leaders and members.

  • Communicate, educate, and provide an appropriate response to student concerns and behaviors, including crises, behavioral concerns, and student conflicts. Adjudicate minor College policy violations using restorative justice practices.

  • Prepare all required reports, records, and evaluations promptly and accurately as assigned.

  • Regularly participate in campus events, including speakers, programs, and late-night and weekend campus events.

  • May provide safe transport for students to and from College events utilizing campus vehicles.

  • Supervise 3-4 Resident Assistants and 1 community assistant - including staff selection, training, and evaluation.

  • Implement the student development programming for the residence life community.

  • Responsible for staff development and meeting planning, including creating weekly agendas and presenting RAs with professional development opportunities through their student leadership roles.

  • Assist with crisis intervention and conflict management, including mental health incidents, roommate conflicts, student conduct, and staffing issues.

  • Advise the Building Residence Hall Association (RHA).

  • Assist with the room assignment and selection process.

  • Assist with developing and implementing policies, procedures, and activities for residential students.

  • Ensures the residential students' safety and security by closing with the Facilities Manager and Campus Safety.

  • Talk to students who are in crisis or distress, referring them to Counseling Services when appropriate.

  • Facilitate conduct reviews with students alleged to be violating college policy and determine educational sanctions for students deemed responsible for violations; Serve on college committees.

  • Assist with the development and operation of summer camps and conferences, including but not limited to preparing keys, room assignments, occupancy reports, check-in, and check-out procedures, submitting maintenance requests, and acting as a liaison between Residence Life and conference contact persons; and Be aware of, understand, and follow all college policies.

  • Be highly visible, maintain office hours, and participate in a rotation of on-call responsibilities for the Office of Residence Life. The on-call duty rotation includes holidays and is required when we have any students residing on campus.

  • Complete collateral assignments and duties as assigned by the Chief Student Affairs Officer, Director of Residence Life & Student Conduct, or his/her designee. Collateral assignment can include but are not limited to: Serving as the point person for the administration of RA training (Fall and Spring), overseeing the RA selection and Recruitment process, In-service Training and RA Professional Development.

  • All Residence Life Team members are expected to serve as a positive role model and communicate any conflicts of interest to the Director of Residence and Life and Student Conduct.

  • Perform other essential functions and related duties as assigned.

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Will oversee the RA programming model, budget requests, and training budget.

  • Will oversee the creation and implementation of hall-wide and large-scale RA program initiatives.

  • Will submit a monthly report and building updates to the Director of Residence Life & Student Conduct.

  • Will be responsible for administration and processes at the front desk, including RA desk schedule, sign-in/out procedures for guests and equipment, approval of overnight guests, and other front desk issues that may arise.

  • Will be responsible for compiling assessment data for all RA and hall programming efforts and reporting to the Director of Residence Life & Student Conduct each semester.

  • Will hear conduct cases, as assigned by the Director of Residence Life & Student Conduct

  • Will collaborate with campus offices and community partners to implement special projects for students and RAs in the Halls that positively contribute to their development.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Intramural Sports:

  • Provides supervision for all intramural, tournaments, and special events.

  • Assists in developing and implementing procedures to address risk management and safety issues.

  • Ensures that all equipment is cleaned, maintained, and inspected according to a regular schedule.

  • Oversees the scheduling management and utilization in the best interest of the campus community.

  • Request necessary resources for intramural sports from the Director of Residence Life & Student Conduct, and Director of Student Engagement and his/her designee.

On-Call Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the "24-hour Staff Member on Duty" in the staff rotation.

  • Respond to all emergencies in a calm, responsible, and professional manner.

  • Must understand, communicate, and uphold all College and Residence Life policies and procedures.

  • Be knowledgeable of all campus and community resources and provide information to residents when needed.

Physical Demands:

This position will require climbing up and down stairs to execute routine job functions and serve in an on-call capacity. Reasonable accommodation will be made upon request.

Required/Preferred Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, or Higher Education is preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with students with learning differences and who are on the spectrum is desired.

  • Knowledge and experience in working with first-year students and implementing a first-year living and learning community are desired.

  • Previous successful experiences supervising college residence hall undergraduate staff are preferred.

  • Experience developing residence hall communities, providing educational and personal support for students, responding to student concerns and behaviors, advising student organizations, facility, and administrative management, and participation in department initiatives and campus life is preferred.

  • The position requires excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, especially during high-stress situations. Individuals who can work in a continuously changing organization and are highly motivated are best suited for this position.

  • The employee must live in an assigned residence hall apartment.

  • The employee will receive a meal plan with the expectation that they use it as a means of connecting with students and helping to develop a stronger community. This meal plan only exists while classes are in session.
