Job Description:

The Office of Residence Life at SUNY Cobleskill seeks qualified candidates for an anticipated vacancy in the position of Residence Director with a start date of August 1, 2024.

This is a full-time, college year (10.5-month) professional appointment. SUNY Cobleskill Residence Directors (RDs) are required to live on campus and report to an assistant director, associate director, or the director of Residential Life. We seek candidates who are committed to challenging their own personal and professional development; who embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion; and who are driven to positively affect students in support of our mission. The Residence Director is directly responsible for all facets of on-campus student housing within one or more campus residences, including the general condition and operation of their assigned housing area and the coordination of academic, cultural, and social programs for residential students. The RD provides oversight for approximately 150-200 or more residential students and supervises a team of undergraduate student staff including resident assistants and night hosts.

The RD supports our residential campus by providing effective co-curricular engagement, crisis response, occupancy management, and ensuring the cultivation of a safe and inclusive living-learning environment. To this end, the RD will:

  • Assume responsibility for the general oversight and administration of their assigned residence hall(s), including but not limited to openings and closings; health & safety inspections; work orders, occupancy reports, damage assessments; student support and engagement; and the training, supervision, and development of student staff.

  • Consistently demonstrate visibility in the assigned residence and reasonable availability to residential students by keeping regular office hours and scheduling individual and group meetings as needed.

  • Fully participate in Residence Director and Resident Assistant training sessions, scheduled before the start of each semester.

  • Interface with students who are in crisis or distress, making referrals as appropriate and mediating roommate and other interpersonal conflicts as they arise.

  • Facilitate conduct reviews with students alleged to be in violation of college policy and determine educational sanctions for students who are deemed responsible for violations.

  • Participate in a campus-wide, after-hours RD-on-duty rotation schedule during the entire term of the appointment.

  • Be aware of, understand, support and enforce all College and SUNY policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrate competency, empathy, and critical thinking in interventions, with a focus on student development and resiliency.

  • Learn and promote methods and initiatives which foster diversity, inclusion, equity, and belongingness.

  • Work as a contributing and reliable team member within a dedicated staff of other full-time professionals who report to the Director of Residential Life.

  • The RD's work must demonstrate and will be evaluated by evidence of their direct and intentional support of and engagement with students. Other areas of responsibility and involvement include: nonclinical counseling and conflict management; residential curriculum; housing operations and logistics; effective time management and recordkeeping; administrative tasks and projects; RA selection and training; individual and group advisement; leadership development; department and/or campus committee involvement; and commitment to the Student Development Division and SUNY Cobleskill. The RD may also have a liaison assignment with another College office such as Student Conduct, Career Development, Wellness, and more. Some night and weekend work is required.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree by time of appointment.

  • One to three years of higher education leadership, preferably within residential life.

  • Experience with student learning and development.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on departmental initiatives and priorities including residential education/student development curriculum.

  • Ability and desire to work within a diverse college population.

  • Must be able to respond to crisis situations and routinely serve on a duty rotation including scheduled evenings, weekends and holidays.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, complete rounds, and physically respond to calls within student residences across campus.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the aforementioned minimum qualifications, it is preferred the candidate also have:

  • Bachelor's in Education, Counseling or related field.

  • Master's degree in Student Personnel Services, Human Services, or a related field.

  • Experience designing and implementing student learning outcomes.

  • Experience with Microsoft 365 applications, Maxient, eRezLife, and CT Banner information system.

  • This is an SL-2 position, with a salary of $41,328.
