The Residence Hall Director provides primary leadership and overall management of a residence hall housing approximately 500 students. The Residence Hall Director is directly supervised by a Area Coordinator and directly supervises one-two graduate student(s) and a staff of 10-20 Community Advisors. This is a live-in position that involves a level of accessibility and accountability to all students and staff.

Position Summary

The Residence Hall Director is responsible for fostering a responsible, inclusive community; providing intentional, development-based supervision; utilizing sound fiscal management and business practices; as well as ensuring a safe, comfortable living environment for students. The Residence Hall Director also works closely with Faculty Advisors and House Coordinators who provide leadership and support for the Living Learning Communities in the building. All residential communities support and contribute to the academic mission of the institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in on-call duty rotation including weeknights, weekends, and break periods.

  • Respond to crisis and emergency situations and communicate necessary information appropriately.

  • Counsel, advise, and refer residents on personal and academic matters.

  • Create intentional efforts to interact with students and provide opportunities for student growth and development.

  • Actively participate in residential academic offerings. Such responsibilities could include an opportunity to teach a section of University 101, coordinating tutorial or group study programs, or overseeing a peer academic advisor program.

  • Promotes the development and implementation of the Residential Curriculum.

  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority and assist with the process of reporting crimes in order to maintain accurate and timely crime statistics and increase the overall safety of the campus.

  • Assist with Departmental initiatives as needed.

  • Assist with summer conference operations or other summer projects as assigned.

  • Collaborate with other staff within the complex and across Housing and Residential Services and Campus Dining to ensure consistency and sharing of best practices.

  • Work collaboratively with the Housing Representatives to manage building occupancy.

  • Act as a University representative at campus events Administration.

  • Support the Area Coordinator in the overall administrative, developmental, and facilities management of the residential area.

  • Actively participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.

  • Promote and develop an inclusive and academically supportive community.

  • Coordinate the selection, training, development, and evaluation of student staff.

  • Seek opportunities to work collaboratively with departmental, divisional, and campus partners through committees, liaison relationships, and other interactions.

  • Advise hall council.

  • Establish and maintain regularly scheduled office hours.

  • Adjudicate University and Housing and Residential Services policies.

  • Support the mission, policies, and procedures of the Department and University.

  • Supervise 1 Graduate Assistant and co-supervise up to 20 Community Advisors.

  • Actively participate as a member of the area team, along with additional Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Residence Hall Directors, Area Coordinators, Housing Respresentatives, Community Police Officers, Faculty Coordinators, Dining Staff, and Facilities Staff.

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)

  • Master's degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs, Counseling, or another related field

  • One (1) to two (2) years of experience with supervision, selection, training, and development of residence hall staff.
