Job Title: Residence Director & Student Engagement Coordinator

Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:

Residence Directors and Student Engagement Coordinators (RDs) work as full-time, live-in staff members and directly supervise teams of Resident Assistants. RDs are responsible for the daily administration of campus residence halls, addressing facilities concerns, resolving student conduct violations, program planning, and serve as a resource for residents within their halls. Reporting to an Associate Director, the RD specializes in one of the student engagement functional areas of the LIU Promise mission while acting as a Success Coach for a caseload of students.

The Success Coach will be a student's point of contact for everything at the University-from academic advisement to getting involved on campus to financial aid counseling to career development-helping the student to chart and navigate an individual path as part of the LIU family. A coach will work with a student one-on-one to create a success plan tailored to their needs, goals and interests, helping students to choose courses; select a major; find scholarships, internships and study abroad opportunities and launch their careers. Success Coaches will keep students on track toward graduation and enable them to make a seamless transition from college student to successful professional.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Manage operations, programming, and safety of a residence hall ranging from 120-340 students;

  • Supervise student workers including Resident Assistants and Desk Attendants in the residence halls;

  • Provide crisis management, conflict resolution, and mediation assistance for students when appropriate;

  • Manage and maintains facility needs, repairs, and cleaning in collaboration with Facilities Services;

  • Participate in a rotating departmental on-call system, serving as the emergency responder for the entire residential system. Duties include communicating to and following up in a timely manner with appropriate staff regarding needs and concerns;

  • Serve as primary advisor and success coach for working cohort of students;

  • Prepare students for their transition to the college, and integrate new students into the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the University;

  • Support the student experience through the LIU four-year model from pre-enrollment through graduation;

  • Assist in pre-enrollment, admissions, orientation, campus, and career activities reinforcing the importance of a collective, integrated college experience geared toward academic and career success;

  • Provide academic advisement to each student, specifically through the progression of the initial registration upon acceptance to major/degree selection as it pertains to career interests and pursuits;

  • Interpret career assessment instruments and provide career resources/advisement, developing a timely career track congruent with students' academic pursuits; 2

  • Review financial aid information and assist students with understanding financial aid procedures;

  • Instruct a section of the one-credit Post Foundations course each fall semester;

  • Coordinate with affiliate departments to achieve program recruitment and retention goals;

  • Complete weekly and monthly reports that demonstrate progress towards retention, student registration, and other key job performance indicators;

  • Plan and execute campus programming, including campus activities, student success, and life planning seminars, to enhance student life, enjoyment, and effectiveness;

  • Create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors at LIU Promise and its additional spaces by advising them of campus resources; and,

  • Other duties as assigned by LIU Promise leadership and University Dean of Students/Chief Diversity Officer.

Residence Director Specialization:

HOUSING OPERATIONS AND COMMUNITY STANDARDS

  • Assist with all functions of LIU housing operations in accordance with ACUHO-I standards and best practices;

  • Assist in the development and execution of marketing plans for housing selection;

  • Assist with campus efforts to comply with immunizations regulations meeting public health law compliance;

  • Support efforts for enrollment and marketing of living-learning communities;

  • Serve as a primary hearing officer for student conduct hearing process and serve as a Title IX investigator;

  • Support the monitoring and tracking of operational data for LIU Promise including: residence hall reports, student judicial records, University Clery records and Title IX reports; • Assist in the development and execution of new student orientation programs;

  • Assist in the recruitment, training and hiring of student leaders to serve as orientation leaders, resident assistants, and student workers; and,

  • Provide weekend and evening coverage of student life and student organization programs.

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or related field is preferred.

  • Qualified applicants will have completed courses and/or training related to college student development, curriculum design, diversity/social justice, gender/sexual identities, international relations, and/or religious studies.

Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience: Qualified applicants will have:

  • 1-3 years of progressively professional experience in higher education, student affairs, or a related field, working with students from historically underrepresented populations • Consistently demonstrate the core competencies set for all student affairs educators by NASPA and ACPA

  • Clear evidence of leadership in and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a record of working collaboratively with constituencies with diplomacy, empathy, and tact

  • Sensitivity to and demonstrated an understanding of the needs of a diverse student body

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with sound judgement and decision-making

  • High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success

  • Ability to design and implement innovative programs with a strong attention to detail

  • Interpersonal communication skills

  • Computer skills/literacy 3

Working Conditions:

  • This is a live-in position; campus housing is provided.

  • Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to properly execute the position's role.

  • Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of trainings, meetings and other university functions.
