Job Title: Residence Director

Department: Student Services

Reports To: Director of Residence Life

Location: On-site

FLSA Status: Exempt

Time Requirements: Full-time, 40 hours a week with on-call weeks throughout the year

Supervisory Responsibilities: Select, train, and supervise residential student leaders in your building.

Summary Description: This is a 12-month live-in position that prefers a master's degree, or equivalent experience, in student affairs or a related field. This position holds 25 office hours per week during university operating hours.

Essential Functions:

  • As an intentionally Christian academic community, Christian employees are hired to advance the mission of Carson-Newman as expressed in our strategic plan, Acorns to Oaks.

A. Housing Services

  • Mentor and supervise student Resident Assistants (RAs), including one-on-one meetings, staff meetings, performance evaluations, etc.

  • Create an inclusive environment in the residence halls that provides a safe living learning environment and promotes personal growth and development among students

  • Serve as the "24-hour Staff Member on Duty" in rotation as needed

  • Supervise committee of Residence Assistants on special projects per semester basis

  • Respond to emergency situations. Examples include but aren't limited to: suicide and self-harm situations, drugs and alcohol, sexual assault, vandalism, fighting, weapons, etc.

  • While serving on duty, must be able to respond to any incident within a 30-minute or less timeframe

  • Remain with residential students in need of emergency care at the Hospital Emergency Room until a parent or guardian arrives, or the student is discharged, at which point ensure the student is safely escorted to their respective residence hall

  • Assist with development and implementation of housing policies and procedures

  • Contribute to and encourage the development of positive working relationships between all residence life staff and the University as a whole

  • Promote the core values of the University and the Student Services department.

  • Organize RA staff selection interview and hiring processes at the beginning of each spring semester

  • Create and implement purposeful RA training before the start of fall and spring semesters to include topics such as: conflict mediation, emergency response protocol, suicide prevention (QPR), fire safety, etc.

  • Adjudicate residence life related student conduct matters

  • Facilitate residence hall check-ins and check-outs and manage the security of keys and building access

  • Manage room change procedures within complex

  • Regularly perform audits on all residential housing forms

  • Attend weekly professional staff meetings

  • Conduct consistent office hours as well as remain available outside of the office hours to address residential student and resident assistant concerns and needs

  • Continually collaborate with team members to create a strategic plan toward the betterment of residence life at Carson-Newman University

  • Participate in departmental assessment

  • Facilitate programming by overseeing RA programming efforts, including approving ideas, allocating funds, and assessing programs

  • Facilitate campus-wide events and programs sponsored by residence life. (Ex. Howdy Hoot, BOOnett, etc.)

  • Host a continuing education event for RAs on the first Thursday of every month

  • Supervise desk workers in Alumni, Burnett, Heritage, and Swann Hall

  • Conduct housing assignment processes including compiling and electronically entering all meal plan and housing data

  • Communicate housing assignments with all students assigned to your residence hall(s)

  • Coordinate with the local fire department and C-N maintenance and Department of Public Safety to conduct fire safety drills

  • Collaborate with C-N maintenance to enhance the physical conditions of residential buildings

  • Work closely with campus partners to ensure the needs of Residence Halls are met

  • Review security camera video footage in the residence halls as needed

  • Update the residence life homepage on the Carson-Newman website as needed

  • Participate in ongoing personal and professional development opportunities

  • Complete other duties as assigned

B. Summer Programs

  • Assist with summer housing assignments, check-in/outs, etc. as needed

  • Assist with recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of summer RAs as needed

  • Assist with planning of Fall RA Training as needed

  • Assist with other summer programs as needed

C. Other Responsibilities

  • Attend staff, division, and training programs as designated

  • Coordinate and/or assist with special assignments and committees as designated by the Director of Residence Life

  • Serve as member of the Student Services Emergency On-Call Team

  • Participate in campus activities as designated

  • Participate in other staff meetings as requested

Education: master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or equivalent experience preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years of residence life experience or other related experience preferred.

Required Skills: Ability to problem solve and mediate conflict. Excel, Word, and Outlook proficient; excellent interpersonal communication skills and customer service skills; ability to tackle multiple tasks under strict deadlines; must reside in apartment located inside complex

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time. Must be able to access and navigate campus facilities.
