Specific Duties

Student Staff Supervision, Development, and Support

  • Select, train, supervise and assess the performance of assigned staff members, including 1-4 graduate level student staff and 10-25 Resident Assistants.

  • Monitor student staff performance in building and maintaining positive communities with an emphasis on forming individual connections with residents, as well as developmental accountability practices.

  • Actively engage in ongoing team and department level learning and development initiatives geared toward student staff skill development.

  • Delegate and monitor student staff positional requirements including programmatic expectations, on-call and crisis management, student of concern support, etc.

Student Behavior Management and Emergency Response

  • Provide assistance, support, and referral for students of concern, in collaboration with CAPS and DukeReach.

  • In collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, educate students about community standards and expectations and adjudicate assigned student conduct cases, meeting with students in a respectful and developmental manner.

  • Serve in an 24/7 on-call rotation approximately 7-9 times a year, providing coverage within the assigned residential area and occasionally across campus with approx. 5,500 students. This may include holidays, depending on scheduling.

  • Initiate outreach to students struggling with health-related, interpersonal, and academic concerns.

  • Support the residential community in ways that attend to the well-being of its members, including mediating student disputes and providing emergency support for the residential community.

Community Development and Engagement

  • Develop and sustain living environments that celebrate learning as an integral focus of the residential and university experience.

  • Strategically collaborate with academic partners such as Faculty-in-Residence, Academic Guides, Living/Learning Communities, and Faculty Fellows to enhance the intellectual climate of the residence halls.

  • Engage with campus partners and departmental colleagues to build a strong residential community which promotes a strong sense of belonging, as part of the QuadEx initiative.

  • Directly or indirectly advise House/Quad Councils, promoting opportunities for student self-governance and supporting efforts to develop special community-wide social events and advocacy efforts.

Sense of Belonging, Inclusion, and Wellbeing

  • Help develop and maintain a residential environment that creates a sense of belonging and equitable participation of all groups, while modeling ways to acknowledge and critically address issues of oppression, privilege, and power.

  • Actively address issues of intolerance or bias that may arise within the community.

  • Help promote and encourage an environment of mutual respect and inclusion for all students.

  • Model respect and trust within the residential community through their interactions with their peers, supervisors, and residents.

  • Initiate and follow appropriate institutional crisis intervention responses and processes in a timely manner.

  • Appropriately maintain confidential and private information.

Administrative

  • Perform administrative responsibilities as needed to support major HRL and Divisional responsibilities including, but not limited to, move-in/move-out processes, Health and Safety Inspections, A-Team, occupancy management, etc.

  • Administer assigned programming and staff development budgets.

  • Serve on assigned committees at the departmental or divisional level.

  • Manage the space reservation processes for their assigned area and assist residential groups with event planning.

  • Provide management coverage for the campus office, when needed.

  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet departmental, division-wide, and University goals and objectives

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned Master's Degree by effective date of employment

  • Previous experience in student affairs/student services.

Preferred Skills, Competencies, and Traits

  • Master's degree in student affairs administration, higher education, counseling education, or similar field.

  • Previous experience as a residential life staff member

  • Previous experience in living-learning and/or themed communities.

  • Experience supervising student paraprofessional staff and advising student groups

  • Lived previously in campus housing

  • Strong administrative, planning, and organization skills.

  • Strong ability and commitment to establishing and maintaining positive and collaborative working relationships at all levels.

  • Superior communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).

  • Ability to work in an environment that includes degrees of ambiguity.

  • Ability to manage crisis situations.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must live in assigned apartment as the primary residence.

  • Must respond to community needs, as required.

  • Must use dining allowance to promote student and/or staff and/or faculty interaction.

  • Must be able to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of employment.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

  • In accordance with Duke University's policies and procedures, all faculty and staff are required to have a COVID-19 vaccination and booster, as well as a yearly influenza vaccination. If hired, staff will be required to present proof of these required vaccinations OR have an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university.
