Job Description
The City of Saratoga Springs currently has an opening for a Reserve Officer. This is a part-time position with the Saratoga Springs Police Department working approximately ten hours per week. Successful applicants must be Utah P.O.S.T. L.E.O. certified.
The position performs a variety of technical law enforcement duties related to enforcing the laws, maintaining the peace, supporting police department operations and protecting the citizens of Saratoga Springs.
This is a great opportunity for a retired officer or a recent POST academy graduate who desires to maintain POST certification and work part time in law enforcement. Job Responsibilities
Reserve Officer
Performs a variety of on call law enforcement duties as needed to assist full time officers in the performance of their duties
May support search and rescue operations
Responds to calls to duty in the event of an emergency or natural disaster
May write call or crime case reports, arrest reports, complaint reports, witness statements, etc.
Appears and testifies in court
Performs traffic enforcement and routine patrol
Operates the breathalyzer and radar equipment
Conducts security checks of business and residential establishments
Issues citations to traffic violators
Performs other duties as assigned
If/When Assigned as a Bailiff:
Provides full performance security in the court to maintain courtroom order
Provides protection of court personnel and facilities
Transporting prisoners to and from the court and jail
Obtains commitment orders and reviews for completeness
Assures proper case numbers
Processes commitments according to established procedures
Assures proper processing of prisoners when booked
May open court by announcing entrance of the judge
Seats witnesses and jurors in specified areas of courtroom
Observes courtroom to insure that proper conduct and order are maintained
Ejects or arrests individuals disturbing proceedings
Observes courtroom congregation for violations of regulations such as unacceptable or inappropriate use of microphones, cameras, movie cameras, or any other device that would prove disruptive or threaten the security of court proceedings
Carries out instructions of the judge
Ensures public contact and conversation with the jury is limited in order to avoid exposure to prejudice parties
Ascertains and informs the judge that counsel and parties are present and ready to proceed
Summons witnesses who have been requested
Escorts jury to lunch, deliberation, or scene of the crime when ordered to view premises of the same
Delivers all formal correspondence from the jury
Generally directs the affairs of jury to assure jurors perform assignments and abide by rules and regulations
Acts as official custodian of courtroom by overseeing heating, ventilation, lighting, furniture, and availability of visual aids
Selects suitable accommodations for use of sequestered juries
Maintains record of jury expenses for court clerk
Assists witnesses, litigants, and public by answering questions about court procedures, but does not give legal advice or discuss merits of case on trial
May serve warrants of arrest and take persons into custody
Conducts pat-down search to remove personal items of persons taken into custody or as directed by the court
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
Certifications Required:
Applicants must possess Utah P.O.S.T Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) certification or Special Function Officer (SFO) certification in good standing
Applicants must possess a valid Utah state driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, police officers are frequently required to sit and talk or hear
Police officers are required to stand, walk, run, use hands to feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and taste or smell
Police officers must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
While performing the duties of this job, police officers work in outside weather conditions
Police officers occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in precarious places, with firearms ammunition and explosives and are occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, extreme cold, and vibration
Police officers work rotating shifts, on weekends and on holidays.

Compensation and Benefits
SALARY RANGE:
The full wage ranges are as follows, please note hiring will normally occur between the minimum of the range and the midpoint.
Minimum: $21.33/hr.
Midpoint: $26.13/hr.
Maximum: $30.93/hr.
BENEFITS:
There are no benefits offered as part of this position.
