The Marion County Sheriff's Office is seeking applicants to join our team as a volunteer un-paid Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Marion County Reserves have been serving our community for decades. Their mission is to supplement the Sheriff's Office staff. We are currently recruiting for reserves to begin the Mid Valley Reserve Training (MVRT) in fall of 2024.

This opportunity will give you insight into the Sheriff's Office and all the functions we provide, including our Institutions and Parole and Probation divisions. Reserves gain experiences training which make them marketable for a career in law enforcement.

Volunteering as a Marion County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputy is unlike any other volunteer program. Reserve Deputies provide 24 hours of service per month requiring a commitment from the volunteer and the volunteer's family. Reserve Deputies are required to pay for some of their equipment.

There are limited special events such as crime scene security and other details compensated at the Entry Level Deputy Trainee pay rate.

Time commitment is a minimum of 24 hours per month with 16 of those hours dedicated to patrol functions and entail the following:

Patrol

Serves and protects the public and enforces local and state laws. Observes and/or investigates, pursues, apprehends, detains, cites and/or restrains and escorts suspected law violators to a custody facility.

Criminal/Traffic Investigations

Interviews victims, witnesses and suspects. Conducts background investigations. Employs sensitivity and compassion when communicating with victims and the public.

Evidence

Identifies, documents, photographs, measures and collects evidence at crime scenes and later presents the evidence through testimony in court.

Computerized Report Writing

Operates a computer to document each investigation with a complete, understandable, brief and accurate written report.

Public Relations

Builds personal contacts with the public on a proactive basis. Provides crime prevention and deterrence training to the public. Maintains a high level of visibility in the community. Prepares and delivers oral presentations to the public at forums such as schools, community meetings, etc.

Emergencies

Applies department policy and uses judgment under stressful circumstances while responding to and/or reacting to hazardous emergency situations.

Hazardous Materials

Utilizes training to recognize and report hazardous material incidents.

Civil Process

Effects personal service of subpoenas, summons, writs, restraining orders and other civil papers on the public.

Communication

Utilizes training to converse over a two-way radio, cellular telephone, and computer mail via workstation and Data System (MDS).

Maintains Proficiency

Completes firearms qualifications at, or above, a standard marksmanship score; asserts above average driving skills under stressful and non-stressful conditions. Maintains knowledge of laws and court decisions. Reviews briefing information on a daily basis.

Observations

Observes activities in assigned area, notes law violations, performs security checks and maintains a high degree of alertness over long periods of time. Gathers and disseminates intelligence information.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:

  • United States Citizen within one year of employment

  • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (Marion County Sheriff's Office will consider applicants who are age 20, if they meet the qualifications of the position and are age 21 within 90 days from the recruitment close date.)

  • Possess a high school diploma, G.E.D., or 4-year post-secondary degree

  • Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation

  • Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.

  • Information regarding the minimum qualifications and physical requirements for Oregon law enforcement officers is available in section 259-008-0010 of the Oregon Administrative Rules.

Must meet the following Marion County requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license, or obtain within 30 days of hire. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business.   • Finalists for this position are subject to an extensive background investigation.

  • Finalist will be required to pass a psychological and physical exam.

  • Ability to hold, aim, and discharge firearm with sufficient accuracy to maintain minimum department qualifications.

  • Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) within first year of employment.

  • This is a safety sensitive/special needs position. Final candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana. THREE STEPS TO MOVE FORWARD

  • Applicants must complete ONE of the following academic proficiencies:

  • Recent (within the past twelve months) FrontLine test with National Testing Network (NTN); OR

  • Possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604; OR

  • Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Police certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

  • Applicants must complete ONE of the following physical proficiencies:

  • Recent (within the past twelve months) Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) completed time from an Oregon Law Enforcement organization or authorized testing agency (NTN); OR

  • Recent (within the past twelve months) Physical Abilities Test (PAT) completed time from a Military or Law Enforcement related source; OR

  • Successfully completed training resulting in the award of Basic Corrections certification from Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

  • Applicants must complete the NEOGOV (Marion County Sheriff's Office) application.
