The City of South Lake Tahoe's Police Department is recruiting for seasonal/temporary Boat Officers. Typical time span of employment is from mid-May until early-September. Work involves patrolling City of South Lake Tahoe waterways and other areas as assigned; enforcing City, County, State and Federal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations including boating laws and boating safety rules; conducting boating safety inspections; making arrests; issuing citations; responding to and assisting at emergencies; administering first aid; and performing related work as required. Workdays and hours will vary and may include working evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Must possess a California P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) Basic Certificate or be certified as a Level I Reserve; must have successfully completedand graduated from a P.O.S.T. certified Basic Course by date of application. Should theapplicant have a three (3) year or longer break from the basic course completion date, the applicant must successfully have completed the basic course waiver process as defined by P.O.S.T. by date of application.

Salaries and Classifications

Reserve levels are determined by California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Reserve Officer/Annuitant - $49.3571/Hourly Wage Equivalent to step 5 Police Officer

Reserve Officer 1and Senior Annuitant -

  • Must meet and pass required qualification as described in section 1002 of the California POST Administrative Manual

  • Must have completed the California POST Regular Basic Course

  • Have the ability to perform general law enforcement duties both with and without supervision

  • Must have completed or the ability to complete a standardized Field Training Officer Program

  • Must have current training certifications or be able to obtain them by the time of appointment

Mission of the Police Reserve Program

The purpose of the Police Officer Reserve Program shall be to cooperate with, assist, and augment the duly constituted Police Department of the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, and State of California. In addition, the purpose is to recruit, train, equip, and otherwise prepare suitable candidates to become regular City of South Lake Tahoe Officers and to recruit honorably retired officers who will be beneficial to the Department.

Under orders and direction of the Chief of Police, Reserve Unit members shall render police services upon occasion, when such augmentation to the regular department is essential to the public welfare and safety. Unit members shall also assist in enforcement of law and order during any and all emergencies declared to exist within the City of South Lake Tahoe by the Chief of Police.

Examples of Duties

Typical Qualifications:

  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years.

Knowledge of boating laws and boating safety.

  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance of duties and completion of training.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to work without close supervision.

  • Ability to enforce boating and other laws, ordinances, rules and regulations fairly and impartially.

  • Ability to operate a power boat in a safe manner.

Ability to learn and perform work involved in operating and maintaining police vehicles, equipment, and tools.

  • Ability to swim at a level necessary for successful job performance and pass a swim test prior to appointment.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid and CPR Certification.

Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Driver's License.
