Job Description

NREL's Center for Integrated Mobility Systems is seeking an engineer with expertise in one (or more) of the following topic areas: Electric Vehicles (EV), Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, Electrical Utility Operations, and/or School and Transit Bus Operations (logistics, maintenance, etc.) to help solve challenging technical issues and provide technical assistance to states, Clean Cities coalitions, public and private fleets, and other stakeholders as they research, select and implement new transportation technologies.

They will serve as a subject matter expert on a team focused on providing engineering support for the implementation of a broad range of transportation technologies, such as alternative fuels, battery technology and connected vehicles. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and directly with these stakeholders to help them make decisions related to electric vehicle and infrastructure implementation. In addition, they will be able to translate what they hear and learn from stakeholders into broader, impactful projects to help accelerate deployment of EVs and charging infrastructure.

Some sample activities include:

• Conduct site analysis for the installation of charging infrastructure and write reports recommending placement and configuration of units, electrical connections, and best practices.

• Collect data, run models or conduct analysis to support fleet planning and decision making, including feasibility assessments related to EV technology.

• Participate in standards development activities such as SAE, ISO, etc. on topics related to electric vehicles, batteries, and charging infrastructure.

• Develop training materials and deliver training to fleet and facility personnel regarding EV charging infrastructure installation and the transition to EVs.

• Provide proactive and reactive problem solving and technical support to fleets, communities, and other stakeholders on EVs, charging infrastructure and other EV related topics such as charging demand analysis and utility rate impacts, energy storage, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), distributed energy resources, energy resilience, battery recycling, and EV safety.

• Present project results at conferences and meetings.

• Prepare written reports of results, recommendations and best practices.

• Develop, scope and execute projects that address implementation barriers for advanced transportation technologies.

• Support all aspects of electric vehicle deployment, such as supporting electric school bus projects (https://afdc.energy.gov/vehicles/electric_school_buses.html )

Researcher II - Working knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Skilled in problem solving, written and verbal communication. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Researcher III - Demonstrated full knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Strong leadership, communication, problem solving and project management skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Basic Qualifications

Researcher II - Relevant Master's Degree. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience.

Researcher III - Relevant PhD. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience.

• Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.

Additional Required Qualifications

• Strong desire to support end-users implementing EV and EV charging infrastructure and other EV technologies.

• Direct work experience with one or more of the following topic areas: electric utilities, electric vehicles, high-voltage batteries, bus (transit fleet/school bus) operations and/or maintenance, and/or electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

• Technical/Engineering Degree or Applicable Technical Work Experience paired with other degree.

• Strong communication (written & oral) skills

• Able to work collaboratively in a team setting with both internal and external stakeholders

• Able to work independently as needed to successfully complete technical/engineering projects and analyses

Preferred Qualifications

Basic computer programming skills/experience (Python, Java, etc.) is a plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $73,200 - $120,800

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
