About the Job

A Researcher 5 position is available at the Otopathology Laboratory in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. The focus of the lab is the study of the ear. The laboratory contains an archival collection of slides of human and animal temporal bones that are continually supplemented. We use light, electron, fluorescent, Nomarski, and fluorescent light sheet microscopy to study anatomical variation, surgical outcome, disease consequence, and treatment success.

Job Responsibilities

An integral aspect of this position is acquiring funding through the National Institute of Health (NIH) or other funding mechanisms. The candidate would be expected to work on multiple aspects of one or more projects at any one time. This will include, but is not limited to, experimental design, implementation and data collection as well as the analysis and dissemination of research data. The laboratory provides research fellowships, and the candidate would be expected to instruct and guide the research efforts of the fellows. The individual would be expected to work independently but also to frequently collaborate with other lab members as well as scientists at other institutions. It is expected that their work be presented at professional meetings and published in peer-reviewed journals.

Job Duties

80%- Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, design and conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and disseminate results in accordance with the research goals of the lab. This candidate will be involved with conducting studies using our animal temporal bone collection, propose and conduct experiments using animal models,

writing and submitting IACUC protocols, and submit NIH grants and pursue other funding opportunities.

10%- Assist with training research fellows in specialized techniques and with the development and implementation of experiments.

10%- Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to, assisting the PI with research-related or administrative tasks and attending and presenting at scientific conferences.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (DMV) and Ph.D. in a relevant area.

  • First author publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals in last 5 years.

  • Strong background in otopathology / hearing research

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong organization skills as well as strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • The candidate must be able to effectively manage research projects with little oversight.

  • Demonstrated knowledge on temporal bone processing and application of immunohistochemistry techniques

  • We are particularly interested in a candidate that is enthusiastic and self-motivated.
