The Research Vessel Specialist (RV Specialist) performs tasks related to the safe operation of all university vessels in support of students, staff and faculty to conduct research, provide education, and engage in public outreach. The RV Specialist also plays an important role in supporting the research enterprise and infrastructure of the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory. Under the supervision of the UVM Vessel Boat Captain, the RV Specialist must be able to make critical decisions independently, especially in emergency situations, but works under the supervision of the captain. In all their roles and duties, the RV Specialist shows open-mindedness and promotes diversity.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor's degree in a related field and 2-5 years of experience (or combination of equivalent education and experience)
fish trawling experience
deploying/retrieving other scientific gear such as water sampling equipment, sediment corers, plankton nets, acoustic receivers, sondes, etc.
must be able to pass U.S. Coast Guard required pre-employment drug test and continued randomized drug tests
Valid Driver's License
must be able to lift heavy loads
able to work independently across a range of working conditions including cold, heat, rain, snow, wind, and at night
must possess a Vermont State small boating certificate and First Aid/CPR/AED credentials
demonstrate familiarity with tracking and scheduling routine maintenance tasks for vessel-related equipment
be familiar with reading system schematics and learning piping layouts
possess mechanical skills and experience with small boat and motor maintenance
possess basic nautical skills with ropework (knots, splicing, rigging) and working with winches and cables
demonstrate familiarity with boats and on-water activities including small-vessel operations
experience working with diverse groups of people
familiarity with computers
able to trailer small vessels
Desirable Qualifications
Anticipated Pay Range $50,000 - $55,000 Other Information
