Location: Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Burlington, Vermont
Description: The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the use and maintenance of research vessels and the facilities of the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, including the R/V Marcelle Melosira - a new 65-foot hybrid electric-diesel catamaran research vessel.
They will assist with the routine maintenance the large and small research vessels, including but not limited to engines, propulsion systems, pumps, davits, winches, cranes and other gear as needed, and will operate and maintain standard and advanced research instrumentation such as winches, trawls, gillnets, benthic samplers, CTDs, water samplers, navigation software, opening-closing net systems, etc. The incumbent will trailer and operate small research vessels and assist in training small-boat operators. They will show sound decision-making skills and safe marine operations practices, ensuring safety of vessel passengers and vessels.
They will maintain knowledge and specialized skills in fire/emergency procedures and critical fire suppression and battery systems and stay current with lifesaving skills and safety training annually, as needed. The incumbent will assist the captain and lab director with running on-the-water and other field safety training for laboratory members in accordance with UVM Risk Management and Safety requirements, including annual safety training, and will assist with ordering, tracking, and billing of supplies and records management. They will actively engage with researchers and students to advance scholarly and academic programs, and serve as the critical liaison with researchers to interpret and translate scientific research needs to on-the-water vessel operations. Work on all research vessels will require heavy lifting, standing, crawling and kneeling, exposure to inclement weather, and flexible work hours during the field season, including occasional night and weekend work as necessary.
Skills: The incumbent has demonstrated experience working on research vessels deploying scientific equipment (e.g., water bottles, plankton nets, CTDs, fish trawls, gill nets), maintaining vessels, and working with the general public and/or students. The incumbent should also have or acquire current first aid and CPR and laboratory safety training and must have demonstrated small boat operating skills including trailering.
