This Research Vessel Captain serves as the master of a vessel in the Division's fleet of self-propelled marine construction barges to execute cultch planting and estuary reef construction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operation, Maintenance, and day to day activities of the vessel

  • Assist Section Biologist in Division's shellfish sampling programs

  • Maintain outboard motors, boats, trailers, trucks, and other sampling equipment

  • Operation and maintenance of front end loaders and other heavy equipment

The Division of Marine Fisheries

The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state's marine and estuarine resources. The DMF's jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Recruitment Range:  $42,464 - $50,874

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL the following:

  • Currently possess a minimum 25-ton USCG Master Captain License

  • Experience operating vessels greater than 30'

  • Experience with general maintenance on vehicles, boats, marine engines, and/or boat trailers

  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment such as front-end loaders.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and sufficient experience in commercial fishing or other vessel work to be a master of a vessel similar to the vessels operated or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: US Coast Guard Master's Licensure for tonnage required for operation of vessel intended for use.
