JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Gilmour Lab at the Pennsylvania State University is currently seeking a Research Technologist 1 in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This is an NIH-funded project that focuses on characterizing mechanisms of transcription control using Drosophila as a model system.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining large Drosophila populations

  • Molecular analysis of normal and mutant Drosophila strains

  • Constructing plasmids, and isolating proteins.

  • In addition, the individual will serve as a lab manager and oversee the acquisition of supplies, repair of equipment, and maintenance of lab safety information.

This position requires a Bachelor's degree majoring in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Chemistry, or a related field plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The vegetable crop research and extension program in the Department of Plant Science at The Pennsylvania State University is searching qualified applicants to fill a Level 2 Research Technologist position. Typical work duties of the selected candidate include: 1) Develop, design and conduct research projects on vegetable crops under the general direction of Dr. Di Gioia and other research personnel and according to standard protocols or research plans; 2) Organize laboratory activities and maintain laboratory, greenhouse, protected culture systems and experimental field in good working conditions, participating in developing research methods and protocols, identifying problems and potential solutions. 3) Collect and correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow protocols; install, manage and operate sensors, dataloggers and relative software for microenvironmental monitoring, processing lab samples, operate laboratory equipment for plant tissue, water solution, and soil extract samples analysis; 4) May supervise lower level staff, wage employees and/or students and train users in equipment operation and research techniques and communicate work progress to lab members; and 5) Assist in sourcing needed materials, ordering supplies and equipment for research and demonstration activities, tracking expenses to keep project budgets in order, documenting costs, and assisting with writing project proposals and reports. The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of research and extension activities aimed at enhancing and developing sustainable vegetable production systems and improving vegetable quality. Some travel may be necessary to conduct research and demonstration activities or to coordinate work with personnel at collaborating institutions. Education and experience: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred) plus four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to candidates with B.S. (or M.S.) degree in plant science, agronomy and related field or to candidates with enough work experience in vegetable crop science research. We are seeking a well-organized, self-motivated and willing to work independently individual. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. The candidate should have experience using computer software and especially Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, Power Point; possibly have experience with high tunnel construction, irrigation and fertigation system design, setup and maintenance and have familiarity or willing to learn how to operate a tractor and other equipment and should possess or be willing to obtain the PA pesticide applicator certification. Experience with laboratory equipment for chemical analyses are highly preferred. Effective English writing and verbal communication skills are also required. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of re-funding.
