The National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for two (.5 FTE and .75 FTE) Research Technologist 1 (NE S SEIU 925 RT, Part-Time) to join their team.

The primary purpose of this Research Technologist 1 (NE S SEIU 925 RT, Part-Time) position is to fulfill the mission of WaNPRC which is to empower the delivery of leading-edge scientific discoveries and promoting the highest standards of care, health, well-being and conservation for primates around the world. This Research Technologist 1 (NE S SEIU 925 RT, Part-Time) position will support research and core programs within the WaNPRC. Under the general direction of the Supervisory Veterinarian and Veterinary Technician Manager, this position assists in providing critical veterinary care of research animals and ensure that procedures and daily activities are performed in accordance with associated protocol and regulatory requirements. This position will provide clinical support to the outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and health of non-human primates.

Some examples of research projects include but are not limited to the following: development of effective vaccines against HIV/AIDS via the oral mucosa, investigation of the effects of antibiotics on microbial communities and mucosal immunology of the GI tract and research of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) targeting HIV resistant cells.

This position performs continuous surveillance for all the research animals for clinical signs of diseases, data management, and high-level oversight of care required for animals on multiple projects. This person also prepares and administers clinical medications, prepare supplies needed for sample collections and procedures, provide technical support for sample collections, blood draws and swab collections, maintains cleanliness and supply stocks in treatment rooms, and other related duties as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

60% - Generate, schedule, and execute course of clinical treatments for colony and research animals.

15% - Collect samples for clinical and research purposes, document specimens taken into a database.

15% - Managing treatment room, supplies, and drugs inventory and keep detailed records.

5% - Provide training to staff and ensure adherence to SOPs, participate in all training activities necessary for performance of the job.

5% - Collaborate with PIs and Veterinarians on all aspects of animal care for new and ongoing research protocols.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Adaptable and learns well in various environments.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

At least one year of working experience with animals in research, specifically nonhuman primates preferred.

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of non-human primates.

Experience performing standard veterinary medical procedures including but not limited to venipuncture, IV catheterization, gastric intubation, endotracheal intubation, bandaging.

Ability to generate and maintain accurate, detailed records using appropriate medical language.

Proficiency in drug calculations, formulations, and dilutions.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

AALAS certification.

CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry 30 pounds.

Physical ability required to do the work.

Must be available to work weekends and some holidays and provide facility coverage for employees who are absent.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, and immunizations, such as tetanus and rabies, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment.

These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing.

Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies and procedures.

This is an essential position. The employee is expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work, such as inclement weather and UW campus suspended operations.

Punctuality and regular attendance are critical components of this position.

Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs.

Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement Primate Training Programs.

Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling primates in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the expectation.

Develop a working knowledge of non-human primate behavior.
