Job Description
Looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated research technician to join the Kehn-Hall Lab! This position is responsible for providing technical support for the Kehn-Hall Laboratory at Virginia Tech to ensure seamless operations and promote a thriving research environment. The Kehn-Hall lab performs research on emerging viruses, including Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), Venezuelan equine encephalitic virus, and eastern equine encephalitis virus. Duties will involve performing in vitro procedures in a BSL2 environment. This position will primarily support ongoing efforts to characterize critical host-pathogen interactions in hemorrhagic fever viruses, including RVFV. Responsibilities also include data analysis, report and manuscript preparation, compliance with all safety regulations, and assistance with SOP development. The individual is expected to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams from academia, government and industry.
Required Qualifications
Successful completion of a BS in Microbiology or a closely related field
At least one year of experience in a virology laboratory
Experience performing cell culture, including sterile techniques
Experience with in vitro viral techniques, including infections and plaque assays
Experience with protein analysis techniques, including western blot and immunoprecipitations
Experience working with RNA viruses, including Rift Valley fever virus
Should be enthusiastic and dedicated, have the ability and interest in learning new techniques
Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions; be observant, attentive to detail, organized, efficient, and work well with others
Preferred Qualifications
Proficient in antiviral activity testing including CC50 and EC50 determinations
Possess molecular biology skills, including experience with RT-qPCR, DNA/RNA extractions, plasmid prep, molecular cloning, luciferase/luminescence assays, and transfections.
