Responsibilities

General Summary:

A research technician position is immediately available in the laboratory of Dr. Hae-Ryung Park, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine. The laboratory has an overall research focus of understanding the mechanisms by which environmental toxicants affect pregnancy and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Ongoing studies include:

• Cellular and molecular mechanisms of metal toxicity in neural stem cells.

• Roles of placenta/placenta-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the regulation of environmental stress response during pregnancy.

Experiments will be mainly conducted in both in vitro models and in vivo mouse models. Experience and proficiency in a relevant combination of several of the following lab techniques are sought: DNA and RNA isolation, quantitative PCR, DNA cloning and expression, cell/tissue culture, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, flow cytometry, ELISA , and immunohistochemistry; experience in in vivo experiments is preferred, but not required. Responsibilities will include: engaging in experimental design and independent execution of above methods from data generation to data analysis; maintaining mouse colonies and conducting experiments with mice, overseeing general laboratory functions such as inventory and ordering of supplies and training of new laboratory personnel in fundamental lab techniques. Weekend work will be required at times, based upon experimental schedules. Interest in and willingness to learn new techniques are essential. Opportunities to publish and to oversee an independent research project that serves the lab's objectives will be available for qualified individuals.

Responsibilities:

• Assists and trains undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to learn and perform assays, routine techniques/methods, and procedures for their experiments. Trains new laboratory personnel in fundamental lab techniques. Works with students and fellows/coordinators on basic and clinical research projects in collecting biological samples and performs experiments and assays (cell biology, biochemical and molecular biology techniques) in cells and biological tissues.

• Serve in a managerial role to maintain laboratory inventory and address needs for instrument repair. Advise the Principal Investigator on new protocols and instrumentation based on awareness of emerging technologies.

• Conduct laboratory safety monitoring protocols according to institutional guidelines. Ensure all other laboratory personnel are up-to-date on required laboratory and animal usage training.

• Assist the Principal Investigator with preparing figures, data sets and written text for grants and publications.

• Collaborate with other personnel within the laboratory and investigators from other laboratories. Participate in lab meetings and seminars.

Other projects and job duties as assigned and as needs arise.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Associate's degree in biological sciences, cellular or molecular biology, toxicology or related scientific discipline preferred.

• 5 years experience with performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities; compiling and collecting data and preparing reports; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

• Experience in animal (mouse) work preferred.

• Experience in cell culture work with handling multi-tasks. Experience in routine biochemical and molecular biological techniques, and practical laboratory and animal experience preferred.

• Knowledge of OSHA Safety requirements and scientific methods required.

• Experiential knowledge of the workings of an academic research laboratory, including general knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology methods. Microscopy skills are beneficial required.

• Prior experience in handling research animals, tissue culture, molecular and cell biology methodology and/or knowledge of immunologically-based techniques are desired required.

• Ability to work independently and the capacity to design, organize, and analyze experimental data that serves as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and obtaining future funding required.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication required.

• Must be willing to work with human biological samples, handling animals (mice) and animal tissues required.

• Good organizational skills, ability to use good judgment, and demonstrate attention to detail are necessary required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 20.92 - $ 29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
