The Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory's (CNL) major focus is to increase our knowledge of the relationship between diet and chronic disease risk factors. The CNL activities involve human, animal and cell culture research studies.

The work is specifically related to the determination of fatty acid profiles using gas chromatography (GC). Training will be provided, as needed. Responsibilities include lipid extraction from various biological samples, GC setup, analysis, integration and data entry; GC maintenance; assisting with routine laboratory work; tracking sample usage and storage; keeping records and ordering laboratory supplies, as needed.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in science with up to 1 year laboratory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and procedures.

  • Applicant should have good communication skills, the ability to interact with other laboratory personnel, work independently, be flexible with work hours, demonstrate initiative, and have a strong commitment to accomplishing project goals.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:

Monday Friday 9-5, with flexibility to work from 8am or staying until 6pm as well as occasional weekend hours. May work with and be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials, human/animal tissue and fluids.

VIEW JOBS 9/20/2018 12:00:00 AM 2018-12-19T00:00 GENERAL SUMMARY: One Brave Idea (OBI) is a unique $75 million investment focused on combating coronary heart disease, enabled by a collaboration between the American Heart Association, Verily, and AstraZeneca. OBI has assembled a diverse team of scientists, together with the latest technologies and scientific advances, to identify the weapons and strategies needed to win the fight against cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. The OBI team is based in the Science Innovation Center in the Longwood Medical Area in Boston, which combines innovative participant phenotyping, large scale genetic, genomic and proteomic characterization, and mechanistic cell biology to enable novel discoveries and drive their application to clinical practice. The program seeks an accomplished scientist to act as a Research Specialist in this complex organization. The Research Specialist will help characterize participants' genomes, proteomes, transcriptomes and non-molecular phenotypes in order to facilitate discovery of 1) novel phenotypic readouts of coronary artery disease at its earliest stages; and 2) insight into its disease mechanisms. He/she will work directly with the Science Program Leader on the development and implementation of the research plan and will be responsible for conduct and support of experiments, functioning as a specialist or technical expert on multiple phases of the projects. The ideal candidate will bring experience in multiple areas of genomics and molecular and cellular biology. He/she will have a deep understanding of fundamental bench science and is considering a non-traditional bench science career. The Research Specialist will report directly to the Science Program Leader (SPL) and through the SPL to the senior leadership. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Contributes to the success and timely completion of OBI research projects by independently performing and coordinating high level, complex research experiments with human samples and cultured cells * Implements or optimizes a variety of advanced laboratory techniques (which include cell sorting, (single cell) DNA/RNA sequencing, multiplex qPCR and proteomics techniques) * Sets up, calibrates, operates, and maintains sophisticated laboratory test equipment * Contributes to the communication of research results through conference presentations, scientific publications, and project reports * Evaluates current developments and research findings to determine their potential applicability to the research projects * Guides, trains and advises research assistants and students on techniques, methods and procedures * Coordinates with core facilities and collaborators in academic institutions as well as the AHA, Verily, and AstraZeneca * Meticulously records procedures and results in an electronic lab notebook (LabArchives), follows the required safe practices and complies with the institutional policies and procedures QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. degree in biology, chemistry or a related field. At least four years of direct research experience.
