General Description of the Position

The Delaware State University DNA Core and Data Science Research and Education Hub are recruiting a motivated and ambitious candidate to help develop a genomics core and high-performance computing with applications in Biology and Food/Agricultural Sciences. Candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and quantitative skills and will be strongly interested in pursuing computational projects, including those that combine computation with wet lab research.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Functions

The following functions are essential to performing this job, but are not limited to:

1.Leading DNA/RNA sequencing projects and collaborating with the Data Science Research and Education Hub to develop and license bioinformatics software/pipelines for NGS data.

2.Assisting the core director in developing training and educational programs for the DNA core.

3.Conducting wet lab experiments with technologies commonly used in molecular biology labs.

4.Training/supervising DNA core users.

5.Operating and managing DNA Core equipment.

6.Documenting DNA Core's quoting, invoicing, and scheduling.

7.Assisting with preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts.

8.Assisting the core director in developing the DNA core.

9.Promoting the DNA core to internal/external clients and stakeholders.



  1. Coordinating administration/management of a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster with the Data Science Research and Education Hub.

  2. Installing/updating HPC software/utilities to support bioinformatics/genomics/proteomics analytical pipe lines.

  3. Assisting in the exploration/development of whole-genome phylogenies.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1.Candidate must have hands-on experience in molecular biological techniques and computational biology /(bio)statistics.

2.Candidate has previous experience in computational genomics, Next-generation Sequencing (NGS) libra ry preps, and NGS system runs.

3.Intermediate or high-level skills in programming languages (Python, R, Perl, Java, C++, etc.) and comm and line operations (bash/shell/command prompt).

4.Good experience in wet lab and dry lab research.

5.Good knowledge of high-performance computing clusters (HPC) and IT.

6.Hands-on experiences in proteomics works (FPLC, NGC, 2D, MALDI-Tof, AlphaFold) will be a plus.

7.Effective oral and written communication skills.

8.Possess critical thinking ability, work ethic, initiative, management skills, consistency, and strong self-motivation.

9.Ability to perform research projects independently and collaborate with clients/users.

Qualification Standards

Education: Doctorate in molecular biology, biology, computational biology, or similar fields

1.Professionally detailing all protocols, materials, methods and results obtained from various projects and depositing them monthly in dedicated folders on the laboratory's computer.

2.Professionally conducting wet and dry labs in genomics, NGS, and bioinformatics.

3.Providing professional training in NGS and bioinformatics and related disciplines to faculty, staff, and students.

4.Participating in grant proposals to sustain the DNA Core.

5.Providing clients/core users with core services and timely reports.

6.Generating quality data and publications in SCI journals.

7.Exhibiting multi-tasking capabilities.

8.Maintaining a collaborative and professional relationship with the Data Science Research and Education Hub.

9.Staying up to date with advances in equipment, instruments, software, and techniques that are relevant to the position.
