Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

VIEW JOBS 10/18/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-01-16T00:00 Join us and make YOUR mark on the World! Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2019 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor! We have several openings for Postdoctoral Researchers to conduct basic and applied research in the continuum simulation and modeling of energy systems. You will apply commercial tools and extend and develop physics-based simulation code in focus areas including energy storage/conversion and carbon storage/conversion. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) of the Engineering Directorate. Essential Duties * Conduct research and development in the modeling and simulation of energy systems for energy storage/conversion, carbon storage/conversion, and advanced manufacturing. * Develop and analyze continuum models to describe the local fluid flow, mass and energy conservation, and chemical reactions describing energy systems (e.g., electrochemical reactors, flow batteries, fuel cells, capacitors, heat exchangers, absorbers, etc.). * Employ and extend continuum (i.e., finite volume or finite element) commercial, open-source, and LLNL simulation codes to implement models and perform electrochemical simulations. * Work with engineers and scientists to identify and solve challenging simulation and modeling problems. * Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internal and external to the Laboratory. * Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals. * Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings. * Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications * Recent Ph.D. in engineering, mathematics, computational science, or a related field. * Experience developing or modifying simulations using continuum (finite-element/ finite-volume) approaches for flowing reactive mass transfer systems (e.g., chemical reactors, electrochemical reactors, fuel cells, combustion, etc.). * Experience programming in C/C++ and scripting languages like Python/Matlab. * Experience with commercial (e.g., COMSOL, Starccm+, Ansys/Fluent, etc.), opensource (e.g., OpenFOAM, FENICS, etc.), or other institutional codes. * Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information. * Initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. Desired Qualifications * Experience developing continuum simulations for electrochemical systems. * Experience with homogenization formulations of PDEs for flow and transport in porous materials. * Experience with massively-parallel computing and one or more associated parallel programming interfaces, such as MPI, OpenMP, or CUDA and open source support libraries such as PETSc or Parasol. Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor. Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the particular assignment. If you are selected and a security clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted. Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.
