The Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) is currently seeking a motivated public health and/or nutrition professional to act as a research specialist to support the execution of several community-based research projects. The research projects are related to nutrition, obesity, and cancer. This position is with Dr. Jamie Zoellner's team and in affiliation with the UVA's Community-Based Health Equity Research Program and the UVACCC Cancer Prevention and Population Health (CPH) Program.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop and adapt nutrition curricula

  • Coordinate and implementing program activities

  • Interact with participants

  • Be a resource for routine and non-routine laboratory activities

The research specialist will also have the opportunity to develop skill sets related to data management, analyses, and writing professional reports. This position will involve collaboration and coordination with numerous middle schools, early childhood education centers, healthcare systems and other community-based organizations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition, public health, health sciences or or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in nutrition, physical activity, public health, health sciences, or related field OR a Bachelor's degree in nutrition, public health, health sciences, or related field with two years relevant work experience is required. Experience gained as a student will be considered.

  • Knowledge of evidence-based guidelines for nutrition and physical activity.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to follow instructions.

  • Excellent communication skills, including with diverse audiences for recruitment and participant management efforts.

  • The ability to understand laboratory processes and knowledge of general laboratory procedures, including interview-administered survey procedures.

  • Proficiency with computer software, including Word, Power Point and Excel.

  • Must have valid driver's license.

  • Experience with community-based lifestyle behavioral trials and grant funded projects.

  • Experience with data entry and conducting simple statistical analyses.

This position is based in UVA's satellite office in Christiansburg, VA, and will require occasional in-state travel. Occasional overnight travel will be required.

The position will be available starting March 2024. This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This is Non-Exempt level, benefited position. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit hr.virginia.edu/benefits .
