A Resreach Specialist (Non-Laboratory) is sought to work hands on with non-human primates at Yerkes National Primate Research Center.

There is not any lab/bench work involved with this position, but a four year college degree in biology, zoology or animal science is preferred.

Experience working with animals - handling animals and giving injections, collecting blood and other biological samples is strongly desired.

Good observational and organizational skills are essential.

Must be able to work independently and as a team in accomplishing daily tasks.

Must have a good working knowledge of research design and implementation, pay close attention to detail and accuracy, have good writing skills, neat penmanship and excellent communication skills.

Must be able to move rapidly from one task to another.

Flexibility within daily structure is essential to meet the needs of varying research protocols.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of defined research according to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules.

  • Sets up experiments as prescribed by a principal investigator.

  • May be required to participate in laboratory maintenance activities such as sterilization and cleaning of equipment, ordering of supplies, inventory and media preparation.

  • Maintains records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases.

  • Compiles data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required by principal investigator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four year college degree in biology, zoology or animal science is preferred.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Work environment is in primate facilities (animal biosafety level 2 and 2+) and in a communal office at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center on Emory's Main Campus.

  • Work hours are 7:30 am 4:00 pm, Monday - Friday with flexibility needed to come in earlier as needed.

  • Evening, weekend and holiday work is required on a rotating basis.

The position is located at a laboratory located at the Emory Vaccine Center with a focus on infectious disease research and flow cytometry. SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES: * Primary duties will involve conducting multiparametric flow cytometry assays including processing of samples (human and non human primate tissues), staining, recording data and conducting preliminary analyses. * The candidate will also perform a variety of other research and administrative activities (e.g. ordering lab supplies, managing inventories, laboratory organization and IACUC protocols) as needed to support various ongoing projects in the laboratory. FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION: * Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures. * Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques. * May assist in protocol design. * Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator. * Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures. Analyzes and interprets results of studies. * Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment. * Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment. * Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings. * Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards. * Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs. * Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in a scientific field * two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. PREFERRED QUALIFCATIONS: * Previous experience in using flow cytometers (LSRII/Symphony), flow cytometry data acquisition and analyses is a must for this position. * Experience with mammalian cell culture and other immunological assays (ELISA, Multiplex, ex vivo stimulation) is desirable. * The candidate will work independently as well as part of a team and is expected to have good communication, analytical, computer and organizational skills.
