Job Summary:

In this role of Research Scientist, the successful candidate will be able to bring analytical, problem solving, and technical skills to laboratory and manufacturing environments - impacting production and product quality.

Role Responsibilities:

  • MANUFACTURING ANALYTICAL SUPPORT Under light supervision, provide technical support to manufacturing facilities by recommending and implementing at-line analytical instrumentation used to measure ingredient, in-process and product attributes. Serve as a resource for existing equipment calibration and troubleshooting. Ensure methodologies are fit for purpose and accuracy of resulting data.
  • ROUTINE TESTING - Under light supervision, monitor ingredient, in-process or finished product quality through analytical testing. Perform simple to moderately complex wet chemistry techniques (sample preparation, extraction and analysis). Perform moderately complex chemical analyses using analytical equipment. Operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation. Prepare standards and controls. Record, compute and evaluate data as well as input data into LIMS. Prepare tables and graphs of data as appropriate. Maintain Workstation Manuals.
  • PROJECT LEADERSHIP - Under general supervision, assume responsibility for projects of significant importance, scope and complexity or assist on more complex projects. With assistance, solve problems through application of knowledge, experience and original thinking. Provide leadership and instruction to technicians when they are assigned to assist on a project. Review results with others and suggest the advisability of further tests and/or changes deemed necessary. Prepare all project reports as required. Make presentation of significant conclusions when pertinent.
  • LABORATORY METHOD DEVELOPMENT/EQUIPMENT SET-UP - Make recommendations for method development, or enhancement, designed to provide new analyses, produce more accurate data, or achieve cost savings. Also recommend and coordinate equipment purchases and upgrades.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES - Approve incoming ingredients and manage the customer COA (certificate of analysis) program as needed

Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Chemistry

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience

Additional Skills Required:

  • Superior working knowledge in analytical test methods and Good Laboratory Practices.

  • Superior working knowledge of analytical test methods and instrumentation used in a food manufacturing facility

  • Demonstrated experience using complex analytical instrumentation

  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical knowledge

  • Advanced problem solving and troubleshooting skills

  • A well-rounded working technical knowledge of chemistry and related sciences

  • Attention to detail, especially with respect to laboratory techniques

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, organize, track and plan.

  • Superior communication skills in verbal and written form.

  • Proficiency in computer programs / software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point and LIMS

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and independently in a flexible work environment with changing priorities and deadlines.

Chocolate Ave. Hershey, PA 17033 Job Summary: Residing at The Hershey Company's Technical Center, this position involves a unique opportunity to work within the Research and Development department. This group is responsible for developing innovative new products for The Hershey Company. The successful candidate for this position will be a major contributor to achieve company goals and programs. The individual should be able to provide input to set priorities and contribute to strategic direction for new product innovation programs. Specifically, this candidate will lead complex projects, and apply in-depth knowledge of product development initiatives. The individual will provide guidance in a cross functional setting, working closely with business partners in Marketing, Manufacturing, Engineering and Quality, to determine project goals and timetables, execute the projects, resolve resource allocation and timing issues and ensure that business Role Responsibilities: * Project Leadership * Lead product development projects which provide innovative new products in Chocolate Product Development. These areas include formulation development, ingredient development and product transformation interactions. * Perform prototyping and development from bench top to pilot plant to full manufacturing scale. * Interact closely with a cross functional group of technical, professional, and managerial staff of R&D, as well as, production, engineering, and marketing. * Understand the business impact of the projects. * Apply technical rigor and scientific principles and practices. * Provide input for technical feasibility for new product concepts. * Product and Process Improvements Program Management * Partnering with Supply Chain to provide technical support to drive quality and value improvement in products and process. Required Qualifications: * B.S. Degree in Food Science, Chemical, Food Engineering w / minimum 5years experience. * Approximately 20% travel required, primarily within the US, but including occasional international travel. Must have a valid Driver's License. * Experience leading innovation initiatives, which could include product development, quality improvement, cost improvement, technology validation and process optimization. * Strong knowledge of various technical disciplines (Sensory, Research, Engineering and Packaging). * Demonstrated Influencing Skills. * Proven administrative ability, decision-making skills, financial understanding, business integration skills and technical expertise. * Demonstrated problem solving and evaluation capabilities * Excellent troubleshooting skills. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Must be open to and comfortable with change and working in a fast paced environment. * The candidate much be able to work independently, and as part of a team in a fast-paced, growth-oriented business. * Knowledge of key steps in the development of capital projects, including commercialization, equipment selection, creation of TFD's, equipment acquisition, commissioning and start-up of process equipment and systems, and troubleshooting. * Understanding of the impact of the key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredient and in-process material to finished product and critical for the day-to-day operation of a line. Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated knowledge in confection and chocolate formulation and recipe development. * Demonstrated expertise in confection and chocolate process platforms (moulding, enrobing, panning).
