The Matrix Sciences Research Group designs and executes custom projects for our food industry clients.

Role summary:

The Research Scientist role will be responsible for the scheduling, execution, and data analysis of projects related to Food Microbiology and Safety. Additionally, the role may help draft proposals and reports and assist in the routine laboratory as required. This is a full-time, hourly position.

What you'll do:

  • Support project scheduling based on provided plan and proposals.

  • Execute on lab activities associated with assigned Research projects, including:

  • Media preparation and sample preparation (inoculating, plating, or otherwise manipulating samples)

  • Execution of testing protocols according to plan, including operation of conventional microbiology laboratory equipment and food processing equipment.

  • Data analysis: including basic statistics and graphing in Excel

  • Identify, document, communicate and respond to any non-conformities with instrumentation, samples and methodologies or deviations from plan or policy, relaying updates to the Director of Research. Support troubleshooting activities, assessment of root cause and corrective actions.

  • Process routine and non-routine tests for the routine microbiology laboratory if required.

  • Draft proposals and/or result reports for review when required.

  • Follow written Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.

  • Other duties may be assigned to assist with the operations of the lab.

  • Participate in review and revision of applicable Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.

  • Monitor supply levels and order consumables as needed for projects.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree with 2-year relevant experience or Master's degree in an applicable field.

  • Knowledge of microbiological test methodologies

  • Work experience with project planning

  • Ability to distinguish colors as required for Microbiology testing.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team.

  • Positive outlook with the ability to adapt to a changing environment.

A Place to Be Proud Responsibilities * Develops clinical diagnostic procedures for quantitative and qualitative measurement of amino acids and organic acids. * Develops research technologies used for advanced biochemical and nutritional assays. * Instructs clinical laboratory technologist and CRI staff (fellows and research assistants) in the optimal use of CG, GC/MS, and HPLC equipment. * Troubleshoots and performs repairs and preventive maintenance on GC, GC/MS, and HPLC equipment. * Prepares grant proposals and serves as principal or co-principal investigator on various grants. * Performs organic acid and amino acids on a routine basis. * Reviews reporting of organic and amino acid results, verifies that results are accurate, and provides interpretation of unknown organic structures. * Implements and maintains quality control/quality improvement protocols and documentation of corrective actions. * Selects and places orders for instrumentation, consumable supplies and other equipment. * Operates and maintains the Finnigan 4000 series gas chromatograph/mass spectormeter, the Finnigan Delta E gas isotope ratio mass spectrometer and the Hewlett Packard 5971A Mass Selective Detector. * Performs chemical purification and derivation of samples prior to GC/MS. * Cryogenically purifies samples for gas isotope ratio mass spectrometry. * Evaluates performance of clinical laboratory technologists and research associates in the use of GC, GC/MS, and HPLC instrumentation. * Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Education: * Ph.D. in science, chemistry, biochemistry, or related scientific discipline, and five years experience using GC, GC/MS and HPLC techniques. Education: * Previous development experience and post-doctoral training preferred. * Effective interpersonal skills required in interactions with physicians, nurses and laboratory staff.
