Facebook Reality Labs(FRL) is a world leader in the design of virtual and augmented reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative researchers with a passion for technology to develop next generation near to eye display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA.

Primary responsibility is developing hardware and related technologies as technology building blocks to enable next generation head mounted display architectures. Facebook Reality Labs is looking for someone who is self-motivated, rolls up the sleeves and is keen to get involved across many disparate technical functions. In particular, a researcher who is able to provide technical expertise in semiconductor processing, including nanofabrication plus knowledge of LED design, growth, fabrication and test.

The candidate will have knowledge of solid state lasers including design, fabrication, test and analysis. The successful candidate will contribute to the company's technology roadmap and will help with the design, development and fabrication of next generation light sources. To stand out from the crowd the candidate is expected to have an understanding of displays.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop nanofabrication capabilities and extend to custom structures for light sources

Work with third parties to develop novel LED and laser structures

Explore technologies which can be utilized in the development of next generation displays

Support modeling and experimentation with the ability to feedback results in a timely manner

Collaborate with other researchers and engineers to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline (hardware, firmware, middleware and applications)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field

Must be available to start employment on or after January 1, 2018
1000+ hours of hands-on experience in working in clean room environments and/ or optical characterization

Demonstrated results through publications and patents

Knowledge of compound semiconductor processing and test

Experience of designing, fabricating and testing nano-structures

Experience with sources (lasers and LED's), spatial light modulators, diffractive optics, optical materials or thin film optics

Experience with III-V semiconductor growth and fabrication and ability to help direct research into these areas

Experience with color science, colorimetry, and visual optics

Experience with test automation and DOE tools such as Labview, MATLAB, JMP or Mathematica

Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. beginning in 2018

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in applied research and/or product development of advanced photonic systems

Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications in journals and conferences such as Nature, APL, Optica, Optics Letters, SPIE Photonics West, CLEO

We are currently seeking innovative research interns with a passion for technology to develop next-generation head-mounted display and imaging systems at our research location in Redmond, WA. These roles are focused on the research and development of optical components and systems towards building advanced virtual reality display systems. In particular we welcome PhD students in optical science or engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or similar. Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. RESPONSIBILITIES * Collaborate with other researchers and engineers to develop concepts that advance the entire LED performance (wafer/epitaxial, device design, fabrication process, testing) for III-V compounds visible LEDs. Develop nanofabrication capabilities and extend to custom structures for light sources. Fabrication of semiconductor-based devices in a clean room environment, including process development & optimization, process troubleshooting. Collaborate with the larger FRL team and provide creative leadership on computational display and imaging technologies. Characterization and data analysis of visible LED devices using technique such as SEM, FIB, AFM, CL and LIV-Lambda measurements. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Micro-electronics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or related field Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship 2+ years hands-on experience in III-V semiconductor (GaN/GaAs) processing and optoelectronic device fabrication 2+ years experience with Experience of designing, fabricating and testing nano-structures Expertise in Micro and nano-fabrication of optoelectronic devices such as red, green and blue LEDs and lasers Strong background in semiconductor physics & materials science Broad expertise in material & device characterization Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications Facebook Redmond WA
