We are seeking a highly motivated computational chemist and cheminformatics scientist to join the San Diego, California site of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This individual will be at the interface of chemistry, protein sciences and biology and be responsible for impacting drug discovery programs using computational methods. In addition to applying molecular modeling and informatics methods to SAR analysis, this individual will be a member of the global Data and Computational Sciences (DCS) Team with exposure to Computational Genomics, data and image analysis and QSAR modeling.
Develop computational strategies to enhance drug discovery capabilities and use cheminformatic approaches to analyze large datasets for Structure-Activity Relationship and quality chemical leads.
Advance structure- and ligand-based drug discovery by introducing computational methodologies to effectively utilize structural information, in silico prediction models, chemical library design and data mining.
Interface with our internal methods development group to develop and deploy relevant software tools to drug discovery teams.
Effectively collaborate with medicinal chemists and structural biologists by providing guidance and support in areas of drug discovery.
Collaborate with scientists at our San Diego drug discovery site and across our global organization to maximize the impact of computational efforts on projects.
Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry, Cheminformatics or related disciplines with 5+ years of research experience demonstrating a strong understanding of drug design and discovery principles.
Expert knowledge of state-of-the-art for computational chemistry and its application in drug discovery.
Experience with commercial molecular modeling and data mining software.
Familiarity applying molecular modeling to ligand optimization. Strong understanding in machine learning methods a plus.
Expertise with a wide array of computational methods, including programming, statistics, data analysis, and QSAR derivation and application.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
