We are seeking a highly motivated computational chemist and cheminformatics scientist to join the San Diego, California site of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. This individual will be at the interface of chemistry, protein sciences and biology and be responsible for impacting drug discovery programs using computational methods. In addition to applying molecular modeling and informatics methods to SAR analysis, this individual will be a member of the global Data and Computational Sciences (DCS) Team with exposure to Computational Genomics, data and image analysis and QSAR modeling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop computational strategies to enhance drug discovery capabilities and use cheminformatic approaches to analyze large datasets for Structure-Activity Relationship and quality chemical leads.

  • Advance structure- and ligand-based drug discovery by introducing computational methodologies to effectively utilize structural information, in silico prediction models, chemical library design and data mining.

  • Interface with our internal methods development group to develop and deploy relevant software tools to drug discovery teams.

  • Effectively collaborate with medicinal chemists and structural biologists by providing guidance and support in areas of drug discovery.

  • Collaborate with scientists at our San Diego drug discovery site and across our global organization to maximize the impact of computational efforts on projects.

Desired Skills:

  • Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry, Cheminformatics or related disciplines with 5+ years of research experience demonstrating a strong understanding of drug design and discovery principles.

  • Expert knowledge of state-of-the-art for computational chemistry and its application in drug discovery.

  • Experience with commercial molecular modeling and data mining software.

  • Familiarity applying molecular modeling to ligand optimization. Strong understanding in machine learning methods a plus.

  • Expertise with a wide array of computational methods, including programming, statistics, data analysis, and QSAR derivation and application.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Requirements

  • Expertise with a wide array of computational methods, including statistics, QSAR derivation and application, and ADME modeling. Experience with data visualization methods & tools.

As a Senior Scientist, you will apply computational methods, including structure-based drug design, homology modeling, QSAR, Cheminformatics, ligand/receptor docking, high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS), molecular dynamics, quantum methods and diversity/similarity analysis and machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) in the design of individual molecules and libraries to advance various drug discovery projects. You will participate in multi-disciplinary teams including chemists, biologists, and structural biologists providing key expertise in the use and interpretation of structural data related to drug targets and their ligands/inhibitors. You will be responsible for: * Execution of sophisticated experiments using advanced computational techniques on UNIX-based computer workstations. * Clear communication of the results of computational experiments and interpretations of structure to team members facilitating the discovery of new drugs is expected. * Development of novel computational methods to address key drug discovery questions. Qualifications * A minimum of a PhD in Computational Science or related discipline is required. * A minimum of 3 years' experience in the application of computational chemistry tools to drug discovery is required. * Familiarity with one or more standard computational chemistry packages (Maestro/Schrodinger, MOE/Chemical Computing Group, OpenEye tools) is required. * Ability to script work flows and implement new algorithms is preferred. * Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams is required. * Experience with cheminformatics toolkits and packages (e.g., Schrödinger, MOE, KNIME ChemAxon, CambridgeSoft) is preferred. * Expertise in large scale data handling (ie. extraction, manipulation, and merging multiple data sources with tools, like Pipeline Pilot) is preferred. * Excellent writing and verbal skills are required. * Experience with high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS), and/or machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI) is preferred. * This position is located at our company site in San Diego, CA.
