About the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology

For more than two decades, the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering has consistently ranked among the nation's top 5 aerospace engineering programs, attracting aspiring engineers to pursue their academic journeys at the Atlanta campus. Job Summary

The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for the position of Research Scientist I in our Experimental Combustion Lab, with a focus on gas turbines. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research on combustion processes, particularly in the context of gas turbine technology. This role involves the design, construction, and implementation of experimental setups and data acquisition systems, as well as the analysis and interpretation of combustion data.

Responsibilities

Experimental Setup and Maintenance:

  • Design, construct, and maintain hardware and software packages for real-time data collection in combustion experiments.

  • Plan and implement plumbing and instrumentation for high-pressure/high-temperature combustion experiments.

  • Assist with the installation and set-up of analytical equipment such as gas chromatographs and FTIR gas analyzers.

Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Develop LabView applications to interface with and control sensor packages during combustion experiments.

  • Isolate and remedy causes of artifacts in data collection to ensure accuracy and reliability.

  • Characterize jet orifice holes and distribution of contamination using optical microscopy.

Material Characterization:

  • Develop and implement systems for creating ceramic insulative barriers with complex internal geometries.

  • Utilize mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and infra-red/optical spectroscopy for material characterization.

Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to advance combustion research projects.

  • Mentor graduate students, undergraduates, and visiting high school students, providing guidance on experimental techniques and data analysis.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing research equipment.

  • Proven track record in designing and constructing ad hoc hardware and software packages for data collection.

  • Experience in the field of combustion research, particularly with gas turbines.

  • Demonstrated ability to characterize materials using advanced microscopy techniques.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex experimental systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficiency in LabView and Arduino for I/O and data collection.

  • Experience with casting and firing ceramic materials.

  • Expertise in mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and infra-red/optical spectroscopy.

  • Extensive experience with plumbing and wiring in experimental setups.

  • Fabrication skills with FDM and SLA 3D printing, vertical milling, and lathe operations.
