Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by maintaining a proactive culture of quality improvement and leveraging data and technology to enhance services.

The Research Scientist (RS) I will serve as a staff scientist contributing to the design and implementation of Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) program evaluation efforts for the Adolescent Family Life Program. The RS I uses tools and methods in the areas of program evaluation, statistics, project management, and informatics to engage in program evaluation and other scientific research studies to promote public health in maternal, child and adolescent health populations. The primary objective of these studies is to inform the design, targeting, and evaluation of prevention efforts.

The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor (RSS) I, Chief of the Adolescent Program Evaluation and Data Unit within the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Division (MCAH).

This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and it is required to report in person to the designated headquarters office location for a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH's Telework Program.

All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed. However, the selected candidate must have a primary residence in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Desirable Qualifications

Seeking applicants who are detail-oriented, able to prioritize work, able to work in teams and independently, and have strong SAS programming skills. Prior experience with program data systems and coordinating with, and preparing feedback for, program implementers is preferred.
