Hitachi America, Ltd. ( is looking for a Ph.D. (preferred) or Master's degree holder in Computer Science or related areas to join the Big Data Solutions Research & Development team as a Senior Data Scientist. The candidate will collaborate with researchers and engineers of multiple disciplines across Hitachi group companies in the US and Japan, in particular with researchers in big data and development teams to develop advanced data analytics solutions in the areas of industrial solutions, with a focus on both algorithms and systems. A technical background in Internet of Things (IOT) and Big Data systems applied to Oil and Gas or Rail industry is desirable. The Senior Data Scientist will also need to develop the relationship and interface with customers and collaborators, research institutes, and universities.


  • Design, develop algorithms and solution using AI, Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics to solve industrial problems.

  • Develop intuition of the customer problems, associated processes and data requirements

  • Initial tasks will include analyzing and modeling structured and unstructured data using advanced statistical methods, NLP, and implementing algorithms and software needed to perform analyses.

  • Develop and architect data pipelines to analyze large amounts of user-generated content, machine data and process data in large-scale industrial environments.

  • Develop methods to support and drive customer engagements focused on advanced analytics in diverse domains such as rail, renewable energy, manufacturing, smart cities and oil and gas.

  • Disseminate results through publications, technical reports and oral presentations.

  • Develop strong patents in areas of interest

  • Ph.D. (preferred) or Master's degree from an accredited college/university in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields (strong mathematical/statistics background with the ability to understand algorithms and methods from a mathematical and intuitive viewpoint)

  • 3 to 5 years of academic or professional experience in Machine Learning and Data Analytics preferably in sensor data analytics, Natural Language Processing/Text mining or related field in an academic or industrial setting.

  • Experience with command-line scripting, data structures, and algorithms

  • Ability to process large amounts of data in a distributed cloud environment

  • Strong data extraction and processing, using Apache Spark

  • Technical ability and hands on expertise in Python, Java, R, XML parsing, and SQL

  • Flexible approach and ability to develop on new skills

  • Self-starter and able to manage multiple projects

  • Team player and a good communicator
