Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated is offering an exciting opportunity for an exceptional Biologist to join our Exploratory Research team in Boston. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent scientist to identify novel pathways/targets to drive drug discovery research in genetically validated diseases. The scientist will also develop and implement novel assays and cellular models to interrogate these therapeutic targets. Vertex is a leader in specialty disease research, including cystic fibrosis, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, sickle cell disease, genetic kidney disease, and others not yet publicly disclosed.

Key responsibilities:

  • Utilize modern molecular biology techniques to validate novel targets in severe genetic diseases with a high unmet medical need

  • Develop in vitro biochemical and cell-based assays aimed at discovering novel therapeutics

  • Independently design, perform, and direct key studies to understand the mechanism of action at the molecular and cellular level, and support drug discovery projects

  • Critically analyze and interpret complex data, and effectively document and communicate results to a variety of audiences

  • Work effectively with colleagues from cross-functional disciplines (chemistry, pharmacology, DMPK and toxicology).

  • Collaborate and deliver on objectives successfully in a fast-paced, highly-matixed work environment

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or (equivalent degree) in Cellular or Molecular Biology, Genetics, or Biochemistry and 0-5 years' post-doctoral experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and assay development

  • Skilled in molecular and cell biology techniques including, but not limited to, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, cloning, Western blotting, quantitative PCR, immunofluorescence techniques, or other techniques that would add value in new project identification and validation.

  • It is essential that the candidate possess strong communication and problem-solving skills, and have strong collaboration skills to be effective in a team environment focused on drug discovery
