Performs essential roles in the researchenterprise of individual laboratories or in providing support for broad-based institutional initiatives through roles in data analysis and assessment. In some cases, Scientists may manage individual labs, core services or analysts of institutional data that is used either internally or externally (e.g., in supportof major extramural programs).

A listing of the key responsibilities.

  • Formulates and conducts independent research on problems of considerable scope and complexity in a clinical capacity across all research phases including design, execution and analysis within the scope of the project.

  • Insures the quality and integrity of data and safe and proper management of study parameters.

  • Explores subject area and defines scope and selection of problems for investigation through conceptually related studies or a series of projects of lesser scope.

  • Manages and reviews preparation of study protocols, statistical analysis and study reports and produces scientific content for clinical and regulatory documents.

  • Provides scientific expertise in an ongoing capacity for assigned organization and may supervise clinical team members.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field required with three (3) years of experience in specific areas of research.

  • PhD preferred

  • Exercises a high degree of creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in planning, organizing, and guiding scientific research programs.

  • Requires in-depth knowledge and experience within specific area(s) of expertise.

  • Works independently with minimal guidance.

  • Analytical problem solving skills with demonstrated skills to define, scope and analyze complex, cross-functional problems and work in partnership with operational owners and project leaders to develop and execute all facets of project work.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, decision-making and leadership skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Must be skilled in the use of data analysis and applicable project management tools i.e., MS Project (or equivalent), Visio, SharePoint, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

The ideal candidate will bring their willingness to engage with people in a given community to effectively collect data, being sure to keep respondent information confidential and secure. Contribute to an important national research project that has the potential to affect government policy. This is a part-time, temporary position, usually 20-25 hours per week, with short periods of up to 40 hours per week. Actual hours worked will vary based on specific projects. DEPARTMENT: FIELD NORC field interviewers are vital to our nationwide survey research operation. We talk to people from every conceivable walk of life in person to obtain information on issues such as health care, employment, and education. The interview is the basic tool by which we are able to provide this data and as the interviewer, you'll have the ability to make that possible. The work we do at NORC has lasting social significance: the data we gather helps legislators and policy-makers determine the best course of action for the welfare of all Americans. Examples of NORC field projects include: * An evaluation of whether a new community policing strategy is effective at reducing crime and increasing public safety while maintaining good community-police relations. * A project that is the most important source of data about the lives of adults and young adults in the U.S. since 1979. Many respondents have participated in this survey since the commencement. * A study which gathers data about families' need for child care and the availability of child care in their communities. * A project which combines interview questions, biomeasures (height, weight, blood spots), and information about participant's location to advance our understanding of activity spaces older Americans live in during their day to day lives, and how that changes as they age. * An ongoing study which collects key details about financial assets and liabilities from households in all income brackets so that the sponsor can understand how the economy is changing. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Follow basic interviewing techniques as described in your training * Schedule time to conduct interviews, owning and managing your hours and overall workload across a variety of shifts including mornings, evenings, and weekends * Work productively and efficiently, keeping in mind data collection goals * Have access to reliable transportation, with necessary amounts of auto insurance * Meet or exceed data quality targets as determined by expectations set during training and throughout the data collection period * Validation of work and related activities will be completed by survey staff OTHER REQUIREMENTS: * Present evidence of identity and authorization to work in the United States (I-9 documentation) * Have a valid driver's license (exceptions can be made for applicants from major urban centers such as New York City) * Present proof of auto liability insurance and unlimited use of an automobile in good working condition * Have working home phone number * Ability to carry a laptop computer, survey documents, and supplies * Availability to attend in-person, paid training sessions (no exceptions) WHAT WE DO: NORC at the University of Chicago is an objective, non-partisan research institution that delivers reliable data and rigorous analysis to guide critical programmatic, business, and policy decisions.
