North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine (NC State CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians, veterinarian scientists, and biomedical scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.

The Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the NC State CVM trains veterinarians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in research-based careers focused on discovering new information about animal and human health and disease and using those findings to enhance animal and human health and wellbeing.

Essential Job Duties

The Battle lab examines digestive diseases through a developmental biology lens. Using cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology tools in the context of animal and organoid model systems, they seek to delineate fundamental mechanisms of gastrointestinal development and disease. The long-term goal is to apply the knowledge gained to gastrointestinal diseases, including short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, metaplasia such as Barrett's esophagus, and cancer, to generate new therapeutic drugs and engineered tissues for transplantation.

Their group has strong connections with gastrointestinal researchers at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University through the NIH funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD).

The selected candidate will work under the direct guidance of Dr. Michele Battle. Candidates should be willing to take initiative to help achieve laboratory goals, demonstrate good organizational and time management skills, and be able to work independently as well as cooperatively to achieve lab goals.

  • Oversee and provide support with molecular biology and histology techniques with mouse and human cells as well as with mouse and human tissues

  • Oversee and provide support in managing mouse colonies for the lab including basic husbandry tasks, genotyping, and collection of tissue for downstream analyses

  • Oversee and provide support with cell culture including pluripotent stem cells, primary cells, 3D organoid cultures, and established cell lines from mouse, rat, or human origin.

  • Oversee and record completed and accurate laboratory methods and results in an online laboratory notebook.

  • Use appropriate tools and software to document and analyze collected data.

  • Communicate summaries of experimental results to the lab staff and principal investigator.

  • Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.

  • Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff.

  • Oversee ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.
