Research Programmer II, Homelessness Research

The mission of the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work is to improve the well-being of vulnerable individuals and communities, advance social and economic justice, and eradicate pressing societal problems in complex and culturally diverse urban environments throughout Southern California, the nation and the world. Focused on research related to understanding and solving the complex problem of homelessness, the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, Center for Homelessness, Housing and Health Equity Research is seeking a Research Programmer II to provide programming support, quality assurance and project management oversight, programmer supervision, and methodological/ statistical consultation on research projects producing complicated population estimates from survey data collected on a population sample.

Experience supervising and successfully managing an analytics team to execute analyses and produce deliverables to meet project and budget constraints is required. Quantitative training in economics, statistics, applied mathematics, or quantitative social science. SAS or Stata experience required. The programmer is an integral part of the research team and works closely with the principal investigator and a multidisciplinary research team. The key role of the programmer is to develop a plan to adapt data that are complex to answer research questions. Programmers also may execute analytical plans for the project in conjunction with graduate students. Utilizes creativity and innovation to solve conceptual programming problems raised by cutting-edge research.

This position is for a full-time, fixed-term, grant-funded appointment through June 30, 2025.

Required Qualifications:

  • MA/MS in Statistics, quantitative social science, economics, mathematics or related field - combined work experience and education substitutable as equivalent

  • Experience supervising and mentoring other analysts

  • Has successfully managed project execution, timeline, budget, and analyst resources.

  • Quantitative training in economics, statistics, applied mathematics, or quantitative social science

  • 5 or more years of experience with SAS, Stata, R or similar statistical software

  • Serves as lead programmer or technical specialist on research projects

  • Relevant work experience to provide strong technical knowledge of programming and analysis as well as senior or lead experience. Demonstrated ability to stand in for researchers as circumstances require.

  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in solving conceptual programming problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in health economics, health policy, public health, or similar discipline
  • 7 or more years of experience with SAS, Stata, R or similar statistical software.

The annual base salary range for this position is $103,441.81 - $115,00.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
